Oh the joys of rebuilding.
I was told on Friday the 8 larger valve guides (0.5 mm larger) I ordered back on January 5th are MIA. Yes, you heard me missing in action. The last known location of the shipment was Canadian customs.

My thoughts are in this order of priority:
1) Place a 2nd order with current supplier
2) Check with a different supplier to see if they have them in stock or can order them
3) Give the machine shop permission to modify the new valve guides I received back in December, which are 0.5mm too small.

Anyone have any advice and suggestions. I am all ears at this point.

The big thing is the 25% chicken tax on all foreign made trucks...

Remember the Subaru Brat? It had a pair of cheap seats in the bed, they were there so that it was clasified as a passenger vehicle rather than a truck, just to avoid the tax on trucks.

Who did you order from? How did they send it (UPS, FEDEX, Canadian Post)? Was it insured?

I'd say try to see if the vendor will make it right, or if they don't, order from another vendor. I wouldn't modify anything, better to get the right part and do it right. But, that's just me:meh:

Anyone have any advice and suggestions. I am all ears at this point.

Trucks or SUV's

Technically all land cruisers (not the troppy or trucks though) are classified from the factory as station wagons.

4wheel Auto. They did not provide more details other than it was lost at customs. I plan to ask for more information on Monday and see if they will make it right.

Alex, if 4wh is unable to solve it. I will probably use your earlier suggestions in this thread of Mr. Yota, West Coast Cruisers, etc. In this situation for this part, who you recommend I try first?

I've ordered some stuff from 4WA, Dan seems like a pretty good guy. I hope he does right by you.

Well, I'd rustle up the P/N from Toyodiy.com and try your local Yota dealership. If 4WA doesn't come thru and the dealership gives you the old F.U., give Radd a call. They are pretty good.

4WA Dan came through today. Last week Dan was short staffed and he finally had time today to track the order down. It cleared customs yesterday. Dan gave me the tracking number and I should have the parts tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest.

The parts are in and the rebuilding of the head has begun. Pics will be posted later this week. :bounce:

Great news. Let the progress begin!!!

hate having 99% of what you need for a project but the one magically necessary piece

Update as of today:
All valves are installed, the valve clearance set, . :clap:The only thing left to install on the head is the shims (aka wafers). Order to be placed tomorrow.

The new radiator, hoses, and thermostat wait for the rebuilt head to arrive at the home shop. We are in the home stretch.

Just in time for the raised diesel prices. No worries veggie oil has been stored away for just this reason...& to avoid said gov price gauging and taxes

The head is completely rebuilt.

Now back to the diesel shop to install it.

Engine is coming together nicely. I will try to snap a few pics on Friday.

In the meantime I decided I want to return to the original size rims 16's instead of 17s. Importer installed the larger rims and tires. Anyone want a set of 4 steel white 17s?

I want to find and install a set of 33 X 10.5 or 33 X 11.5. This troopy will see the majority of its time on hard rough dirt paths and highway. It will be my winter DD, travel to parents (Western PA) vehicle, and transport of gear and people to adventures in all sorts of weather and terrain conditions, Overlander Expedition vehicle. What do you guys suggest for tires in these sizes?

After I change out the tires then I need to replace the rear bumper. I want a bumper w/ duel swing outs for tire and jerry cans. Crusher built a sweet one: https://forum.ih8mud.com/70-series-tech/436341-troopie-build-12.html
I have been following his troopy build. I plan to PM Crusher in Ontario for his suggestions and request dimensions. Then I need a welder and some friends to help build/install w

After tires, my last initial repair will be stereo with built in IPOD and CB. I really wanted to find a way to not have a stereo headunit, but Apple has not developed a docking station for cars.:hhmm: The reason is then I would have space to install the CB in the original headunit space. Does that make sense? Anyone know of a way to do just that?

If I cannot find a way for the IPOD to power the car speakers w/o headunit, I will install a new head unit and install the IPOD connections in the glove compartment or the armrest inorder to avoid messy wires.

Suggestions/thoughts?

Its alive. After much patience or shall I say perserverance, the engine cranked over and ran this afternoon. We are addressing an issue with low oil pressure when idling according to gauge tommorrow. Any thoughts on what might be causing the gauge to read low oil pressure at idle?

Well the test drive proved the 1993 HJ75 Troopy is alive and ready for overlanding adventures. It proved it is a overland vehicle last Wednesday through Sunday.

Last week, I purchased new Nitto Terra Grapplers for it and then proceeded to drive it to Charleston, WV on Wednesday. From there my wife and I traveled to Grand Rapids, OH for the wedding party party.:bounce:We slept in it Thursday night-Queen size Coleman inflated mattress in the back. Perfect except for the ventilation issues-I shut the door when I came to bed due to the 50 degree temp and solid wind blowing-should have left them open or opened the windows-learning moment.

The troopy ran at 22 mpg from Greensboro, NC to Columbus, OH. Not too shabby for a freshly rebuilt diesel climbing through the mountains of West Virginia and Virginia.

We received plenty of looks on the highway and in town. The people staying at the hotel gave us the strangest looks walking out in suits to jump in this safari looking vehicle. I wish I had had my camera with me-both for a pic of us in it and of them looking at us.

On the drive back, the troopy averaged 25.8 mpg. I think it will take a few more hours/miles of driving for the engine to break in and to get accurate numbers on the fuel efficient. Anyone know how long it take to break in a rebuilt diesel?

Happy to have it running.

Cheers!

Corgrats Quinton.

Always fun to be back up and running but no better way than lay down some miles on the asphalt.
Glad she ran well for you on the trip and looking forward to gawking at this one myself soon.

cheers, and nice numbers for the mileage too. Should only get better.

Congrats.....

You will love every min of it, there are some guys on my old home forum building some serisoue expidition rigs from troopies landcruiserclub.co.za, check it out they are doing some great stuff.

I miss ours ever day :) but man that thing felt like it was going to fall over on every corner. Go for medium suspension unless your really going to load her up!

Spent the morning debating whether to install a locker, in particular an ARB. Then began to realy think a WARN 9.5xp would serve the troopy's needs and uses more.

Will rebuild the front knuckles and seals this upcoming week & install new transfer case bearing.

In September-Winch, lights, & dual battery w/ relays.
