Reboot CV's or Buy Refurbished omplete ones? (1 Viewer)

OK so I am just about to head down to my uncles to replace the boots on the CV's. He just called me and said it would be better and cheaper to get refurbished CV's that have the boots on them. He said he can get them for $60 a piece and that they would be better than the originals I have in there (116,000mi). Any opinions on whether we should take the time and reboot the original CV's or buy the refurbished ones?

Non-OEM CV's fail quickly on these trucks and I certainly would never venture off road with one. If the $60 is a rebuild OEM then that would be a great value to say the least.

I don't remember what I paid for my boot kits, but it wasn't much. $30? You'll also want to get the pFran clamps (search for them here).
 
Do not install aftermarket CV's. They are junk.

I highly doubt that these are refurbished OEM CVs. I'm guessing they're "OE". If they truly are, they'd be the first I ever heard of.
 
Ok so I will make sure they are Toyota OEM CV in just a bit. If they aren't then don't use? There are three mechanics saying they use these in their truck that they off road instead of rebooting and have had good luck.

Nope a jeep and 4 runner. They just have used them in the past. It'll check on whether they are Toyota or not.

That's the problem. The LC CVs don't have an aftermarket equivalent. So while other models may not notice a difference, every time someone has tried here they've failed, at least that we've heard.
 
Do it yourself bro!!! You will learn from it. The learning will come in handy out in the trails if you or someone else ever need help. It easy. Buy the OEM boot kit at your toyota dealer. About 50 bucks each side. "You can do it!" Get the clamps from PFRAN or Mcmaster Carr. Part numbers are on here somewhere. :beer:

Hahaa yeah I've got the reboot kits.I'm working in a unique situation using my uncles shop. And I don't have much time here. His mechanics already ordered me some reman cv's but I'm going to make sure in the morning they are reman Toyota and not napa or anything. But heyimay end up doing it anyways to have spares if they are reman! Preciate the support haha!
 
I'll pile on... dont do non-Toyota. Dealer that sold me the truck replaced spent OEM with aftermarket before I bought the truck... 30K later I just replaced it and the other original (at 161k) with brand new factory units.

reboot your toyota axles or buy new ones, dont do the reman stuff. Yes, i broke a reman unit.
 
Yeah, I know I'm late to this party, but...

Just to add to the mix, I've got nearly 50K miles on a non-OEM drivers side that has seen some pretty heavy abuse. Obviously, the quality of material used is inferior and will likely lead to premature failure but hey for $60 bones, I"d throw it in until you have time to repair the OEM unit, then keep the cheapo for an emergency spare.


Repaired and kept my original until the knockoff breaks, but it's not cooperating. It's probably waiting for the most inopportune time to go. :)
