I want to add a winch to the rear of my 96 fzj80 "Fatback" so that i can pull up the rear axle on steep departures.....I was thinking a small 2000lbs atv winch would be sufficient...help a brother out with a few pics and words of the dos and don'ts.... seems easy enough..weld a tab on the top of the axle and route the winch to it controls mounted inside the cable....

how would you limit the winch and have a way of knowing when your axles are tucked and make sure you don't draw out too much line when dropping the axle back out (do you need to). did a search, clearly an incorrect search if one of you come up with a link.:flipoff2:

Thanks in advance.

there was a thread about this a while back, but, i think for what you describe one of those rock crawler video camera setups would let you know whats goin on back there. A 2000lb winch with only 1 wrap of cable on the spool should be sufficient, and you could run a bungy off of the cable to the frame to keep the slack pulled tight. cheers.

thanks for the help....any pics? I"m a visual learner when possible

Here is mine. I like the use of relays in the wiring of the Warn as opposed to the Harbor Freight units.

Jack,

What model is the Warn winch? How much pulling capacity is recommended for the rear? I think it would be nice to have one for times when you're going down some really steep hill and you want so slowly winch yourself down.

Thanks,
Charles

Someone want to explain the use of this to me? Is it just to suck the rear end down to prevent going endo? I suspect it doesn't do much for your departure angle though?

As it pertains to my truck...going down steep hills, or big drop offs causes the suspension in the rear of the 80 to start unloading especially as the rear follows the front off a ledge. Being able to tuck the rear axle will reduce the unloading.

The rear winch should also help out my off camber situations and reduce the body lean as it sits off camber.

Any other uses I might be missing?

The ones I see in use are almost exclusively ATV-sized winches - I think it would be very easy to overload the tiny brake in those things?

That is why the higher quality small winches are nice. Better braking system ;)

Charles, mine is the Warn 3000 lb. It works very well for controlling the rear suspension, but like Rich, I don't think I would spool it out to hold the rig on steep decents.

Thanks Jack. This might end up being my next project for my junk....
