In the middle of a frame off right now and was hoping to get some ideas on how to fab up a rear winch mount that would still allow me to run a centered hitch receiver.

I did see one photo online of a 40 with the rear winch offset to the passenger side but then I realized they had coilovers in the back too. I would like to keep the winch tucked up as high as possible obviously.

I'm going to be building a rear bumper with a tire carrier and some cutout on each end for the exhaust and have a pretty good idea on what I'm going to do there. Not sure with the rear crossmember and a bumper bolted to that how I would get the winch line out through the fairlead. Maybe cut the crossmember larger so there is no way the winch line can rub on it behind the fair lead and then "re-brace" the rear of the frame....

I hate to admit it but this is more for the cool factor, the winch will probably not see that much action...then again I pulled so many people out of the snow last winter that my hitch receiver was completely twisted outta usability

I have an IPOR bumper like the first picture except they mounted the receiver below. Seems to me there would be plenty of real estate for a winch in a similar location.

Ghood looking rig and bumper. And yea with the hitch below that might work except I'd need to get pretty fancy with mounting the receiver since the fairlead would be cut out right where yours mounts....

Thanks for the bumper shot, looks great

I used a receiver mount on my blazer for years same winch front and back ran #2 wire from the batteries to the rear and used quick disconect plugs.. worked great even made up a set of 20' jumper cables for the plugs, 20 years later blazer is gone disconect plugs and jumper cables still here getting use... had same setup on 3 trucks..

We are working on this in my shop now. I am running an six tank so there is no room under the rig.

I agree with Living in the past. That Winch bumper sticks out too much and will screw up your departure angle. When you come off an obstacle or ledge the bumper will hit hard and probably bend it up, along with the stk rear cross member that it's bolted to. Ive seen 40's with the receiver below the cross member, like in a previous pic get hit coming off an obstacle. You can see how much abuse this skid plate takes on this tucked under winch mount. You want your rear bumper as close to the cross member as possible. Personally if I need to winch backwards, I run the cable underneath the vehicle or have someone with a winch or strap, pull me out.

My biggest concern lost departure. Also will the barn doors open with the winch mounted? Looks like a 68 or early 69. Have a 68 and 70, both original AZ cruisers. Those have the sill cut for the trailer light socket. Not sure which was worse.
I have the same concerns will have a skid plate to assist in the effort. The problem is that I have an six tank in the spot typically used. I will find out soon enough if it’s a problem for me or not.

I will be honest I have no idea of what a six tank is. I know many parts of the country running a cable underneath from a front winch could be a issue being stuck in mud. Have never had that problem in AZ. Have had issues dropping off a ledge and landing on the bumperettes. That has happen numerous times on the more primitive FS roads around Flagstaff. Think with a setup that far out would have gotten hung up. Forest Service has solve this problem. Most the primitive FS road are not on the current travel maps. Still have my 1970 version of the Coconino National Forest map. Shows the fractions of roads open today compared to fifty years ago.

Aux tank stupid spell check got me. If it causes me grief I can always cut it off and do something else. This all began when my basket caught up and broke my bumper. Once the skid plate is in I think it’s going to be tough to get hung up or bend it but honestly I am a bit abusive to the poor girl. So time will tell.

Funny my 68 and 70 both had aux tanks I have since removed. Back in the eighties use to travel from Phoenix to Flagstaff quite a bid. Second tank came in handy. In the nineties started towing the 40 instead of driving it. Now leave them up north and have removed the second tanks.
