Ok a friend of mine is looking at running a 60 series front axle in the rear of his 40...

adviseable or not?

Seen here localy on a BJ42, looked real funky, not sure how he got around the rotation issue??

He claimed it worked great and for on road he had a centering pin he would drop in with a clip for saftey.

I would be worried about the load on the birfs. May be some 4340 inners and outers would hold up. Couldn't you use a 3rd from a FF rear? You would have to modify the housing for ring gear clearance, but wouldn't that work?

flip the third and figure out what to do about oiling the pinion bearing...

I would want it to be a lightweight 40 without too much power...

fj80 front would be better if you can get around the rotation issue

Do what W has done. Take a toyota housing and shove some rockwell outers on it. It will give you rear stear with a ton of strength. Of course you will have to get some custom inners made. But if you want to keep the housing cruiser that is the way to go.

You do not have to flip the third or worry about oiling issues.

The axle will be fine till you bust a birf.. Which will be about 50' into a trail. Then in another 20', then in 10', then you will be a bit more careful, and last 60' or so..

30 spline longfields would be a must..

But in the end, if he wheels it hard the longs will snap too..

Most D60 rear steer axles have significantly upgraded shafts.

FWIW

Only 80 Birfs trump mini birfs size and strength wise.

Conventional wisdom says that a built Mini front will take 40's reliably in a front application but starts eating diffs. It MIGHT last in a rear application in a super light rig, but why?

If you need rear steer, get it with a 60 and call it good.

the front and rear 3rds are the same (i'm running a front 3rd in the rear of mine at the moment.

no rotational issues

In the rear, a low pinion 3rd runs on the drive side of the gear, in the front it rides on the coast side. The front sees about 30% of the stress that the rear sees so running on the coast side is generally fine. That is why the High Pinion 8" 3rds are in the front of the 80 series. They are as strong as a 9.5 if used in the front.

I digress.........

As for the person saying use 80 series stuff in the rear...yes it is bigger, but the 4340 30 spline stuff in a standard birf is stronger than a stock (larger) 80 birf.

According to Longfields testing at the Tinbender Jambo, the 30 spline Birf and axle is as strong as a stock 35 spline D60.

Stock D60 stuff does not survive in the rear of a rig in riear steer applications.

4340 stuff is slightly stronger than a stock 80 series inner. W had a set of 80 series inner shaft tested for what kind of material it was and his results netted that it was made out of 4140 from the factory.

I read in some place can't remember where right now .. the 4340 Cromo 30 splines set from Boby Long are more tough than D60 35 splines ..

They broke at the same strength on his machine.

That said, STOCK 35 spline D60 stuff wont' last in a rear steer application. Alloy axles and 300M joints are a must.
