So the older my kids get the less and less they actually fit in the back of my bj74. Has anyone moved their seat back from its original location? I was looking up cage ideas the other day and I saw the seat was moved almost all the way back and it got me thinking.

Lemme know

The brackets are more or less just bolted to the floor. There is a divot for the latch in the back of the seat but that's easy to move. It may be drilling new holes and then beefing up the floor area where it bolts to

For a while on MUD I read many threads in search of semi-legendary bolt-in mounts that used the OEMs as a starting point.

They are not available any more.

I had an aftermarket cage fab'ed up and installed which then allowed me to mount the OEM fold and tumble bench further back. It comfortably seats regular-sized adults back there now. The cage was necessary for the safety of my kids riding in back but the added benefit was increasing leg room significantly.

Funny part is that pretty much looks exactly like the cage I was looking at. Where did you get your cage done at?

@jfrench Are those your original JDM seat brackets? They look like my CDN BJ70 brackets, which, I think are the same as Euro BJ73 brackets and they are mounted in between the wheel wells. Supposedly, the Euro BJ73 has more rear seat legroom but I have not confirmed.

I ask because my JDM BJ74 brackets are smaller and were positioned in front of the wheel wells. The brackets cannot just be just moved rearward.

Looking underneath the BJ74, there is just one added plate for reinforcement.

If the OP has the same, smaller brackets, I'd imagine he could just modify the brackets so they bolt in between the wheel wells, then move the seat 2-3" back and remount. It even looks like the undercarriage reinforcement plate would accommodate such.

Local shop in Denver called Two Create Motorsports...quite a bit more expensive than some other local shops that I looked at but they could get me in quick and get it done on my timeline. I'm very happy with final product.

Good eye! I should have mentioned that I sourced a Euro spec fold and tumble as the shape of the bench allows it to sit further back over the wheel wells and the width between the brackets is narrower to accommodate moving it back. It could still be done with JDM spec bench seat, it would just need to sit a little bit higher. I was going to go that route if I couldn't find a Euro spec bench. So yes, Euro spec does sit further back than JDM, but not as far back as in my current configuration with the cage.

Well I'll be damned I just looked at my brackets.. they will either have to be in front of or in the rear of the wheel wells.

Looks like I should start looking for a new rear seat.

My BJ73 has the stock seat located farther back then the BJ74's They also came with stock roll bars and shoulder belts in the back.

You know the seat in the bj71 that I got my trans out of had the same seat. I had the damn thing in my hands too and didn't install it because the brackets where different.

I measured the rear seat in my TJ and it's about 33.5-34 on the brackets and my 74 is about an inch or so wider in the wheel wells (quick lazy measurements don't use it for reference)

May start looking there

I also thought the farther seat and roll bar might be related but it is not the case. There are JDM 73/74's with roll bars too.

Modifying/fabricating a new bracket doesn't seem too difficult to do. But if you want to install a TJ seat... theFerg has already done it....

Just another JDM BJ74 in the U.S.

I just took a look see through that post. It's a good option for sure, and with a new best top seat around $180 makes life a little easier. (There's not a wrangler in a junk yard anywhere near me)

Another option is this

But we shall see. I need to get to measuring back there and make sure it will actually fit first.
