I'm tired of pulling the wheels off my bike every time I want to take it to the trails just so it will fit in the Cruiser. Various websites I checked so far don't have what I want. I'm looking for ideas to mount my bike to the back of the (1974) FJ 40. So far unless I convert to a receiver hitch and buy an Extend-A-Bed setup, costing almost as much as the bike, I'm looking at fabricating something.

Any ideas out there?

i use a spare tire bike rack by Rhode Gear...they are cheap...and sometimes you can find them on craigslist

Get a reciever square "tube", weld it to a backing plate and bolt it to the front or back bumper. You'd still need one of those reciever hitch bike racks, but there are tons of those out there and they can be pretty cheap... I paid $50 for my "hitch". It doesn't hold much weight for towing ( bolted on), but holds the bike rack fine.

Extra beefy Downey receiver from the specials page at Marks Off Road and a Kuat NV rack. In the picture the rack is folded up and the bike is hanging off the built-in workstand. :) It also has a built-in cable lock. Nicest rack ever. This setup may well cost more than your bike, but not more than mine.

BTW: I've towed a dead Bronco a couple miles up a rocky trail off of this receiver.
