Just thinking out loud here..I don’t have my dash pad, and they’re crazy expensive to source..would it be possible to use a nice dash cap to make a new dash pad? Just fill it and install mounts in it? Maybe fiberglass some support and foam fill? Seems like an easy project..

I have my OEM pad. Its rough is putting it mildly. So I'm going to recover it in leather and fill in the divots with some foam. Rubber cement, perhaps some screws or rivets on the back side to help secure it.

I assume you mean 55404-9030x? Have you asked Dave Stedman at Japan 4x4 for a price?

see thread here for dash shelf ideas.... you can also do the dash box

I can't stand plastic interiors. I bought a new OEM pad for my FJ40, but, I'm not really happy with it. It is plastic, and I wanted the look of the original truck, but, not the UV-imposed-dash-disaster that I acquired with the truck. When it and the lower dash pad was off, I began to appreciate the interior a bit more; I like the flat look with the hinged windshield. To me, these trucks really shine with the removal of the floor mats, and the asphalt floor insulator, even more so when you have the earlier, steel stamped hard doors.

I wonder if anyone outside of the USA considered fitting these nasty plastic add-ons?
It's clearly a mr-T afterthought to meet standards of the day rather than a stylistic choice.
I'm sorry but I'm really not a fan.

Wow, lots of great info! Thanks, guys. I don’t mind the look without the pad, it actually looks cool. I was more thinking about an original look..I’ll be painting in the next few months, so yeah, I’d just weld up the holes and go from there, if I go that route.
I’m still cutting and welding rust patches..lol..and daily driving it..

If you import a sweet SA 40 Series your dash would look like this
