Today I attempted to remove a bypass of the rear heater line that runs behind the engine. The PO had installed a flush tee that was leaking and had to go.

Since most of the hoses needed to properly fix the system are NLA I just decided to remove the rear heater completely.

My question is if there is a specific hose I should get for the bypass. Is it standard 5/8" hose? Or something more specific. Any input appreciated.

The hose runs from point A to point B.

And hopefully will look like this when done (although not as clean).

No specific hose just straight water hose. Why didnt you keep the heater and use regular water hose? MIke

I deleted my rear heat and got a hose from SOR that is molded to make those bends. As noted, regular hose would likely work but SOR has it.

Actually, it is a toyota hose but SOR bought all the stock when Toyota discontinued them. Mine still had factory decals.

Use the schematic to identify the right hose and then go to the listing and look for that hose but "w/o rear heat"

Little pricey but thats okay.

I like the rear heat but I also like simplifying systems. I think I'll appreciate the under seat storage space more. I took out my rear seats so the rear heat was mainly used to warm up the truck while camping. A 12V heater will be able to perform that function without running the engine.

The only hose I found from SOR is for a 62.

Look at #15 below. Pretty sure that is it. I would definitely call and talk it through with them. They definitely have them and that is the hose Prowlerdriver installed on his 60 - the one in the pic in your original post. I think he got his from Toyota before they discontinued them.

Cost is a little high but it's SOR:

That does look similar. Might just pick up some 5/8" for now and pick up that part later on.

Any special coolant I should pick up? Orange stuff? Is there really much difference?

I use a Prestone that is compatable with green, red, whatever. I read, and read, and red on the coolant issue but settle on a good system flush and the aforementioned Prestone.

I still have a set of rear heater lines from an '88 FJ62 I parted out years ago. I have from the firewall to part #67 in the previous post pic. If anyone needs it, shoot me a PM. Thanks

Well the fix was pretty easy. Just a 3/8" brass plug on the drivers side and a length of 5/8" hose for the bypass.

I'm a big fan of keeping this rear heater as it keeps the girl's toesies warm ;)

That's what your mouth is for ... And if you're from the South, that even goes for family...

;)

:grinpimp:

Rather than starting a new thread I will revive this one. I too would like to delete the rest heater since I live in SoCal and it only gets down to a bone chilling 48 degrees during our winter. I'm curious where the brass plug goes in the drivers side?

I was in the middle of replacing all my coolant hosed when I had an opiphany and thought I'd like to delete it instead. I may have already purchased and installed unnecessary hoses.

It screws into the metal riser pipe on the d side of the head.
The part below has the correct threads. SS too.

Yeah, I live in the SFV and I have NEVER used mine. I suppose I'll take it out when it leaks, otherwise, it's just another radiator.

The Toyota part # for the hose if there is no rear heater is 87245-90A02, but it's been discontinuated. You might be able to find a molded one through cross-ref or matching up something at your local vatozone.

SOR has one that is molded to fit. It's the hose you can see in the picture on my previous post. Fits well. A straight hose won't work. I already tried that. Kinks.

Any idea what the Gates # is on that hose? I just can't bring myself to spend $35 for a $12 part.... :meh:

It has some sort of number stamped on it. You can read them on the picture (or most of them). My cruiser isn't nearby at the moment.

No kidding about the $$$
That was one hard buying decision.

I tried with the visible numbers but no good.

I tried to do the Gates match too before I bit the bullet. After several days of dead ends, I gave up the quest. It didn't seem worth it to spend a week trying to save $20. SOR won.

LOL --- yeah, they usually do. I'll prolly pick one up next time I'm there.
