Anyone replace your old chrome hatch supports with modern hydraulic ones ?

Anyone have a part number?

I went to the local chrome shop---they wanted $400 (ouch) for rechroming!

Figured the modern style ones are clean & simple. Don't look half bad.

Actually they were just telling you they didn't want your business. I guess the economy isn't as bad as I thought it was. :)

I did use the pressurized cylinders. It's been quite a few years now so my memory is real faded.

I was going to put the cylinders into the stock housings like others have done and posted here on Mud, but the rear hatch door didn't lift high enough that way to keep me from hitting my head on the hatch door. So I fabbed some mounts and went with just the black cylinders like in your picture.

The cylinders I originally tried were way too strong, I think like 60 or 70 pound capacity. I then went with some lighter capacity units that going by my memory were about 50 pound capacity. Even those were almost too strong. I'm thinking something like a pair of about 35 pound capacity would be better.

At the time I did post up my experience, but I don't remember if it was a thread I started, or on somebody elses thread about the mod. I have to go do some other things right now, but if I'm not too tired when I'm done I'll see if I can find that info.

I just took my oem cylinders apart and took my chrome shop all the pieces. I also took the 4 mounting brackets and the whole bill was $200. IMG_0205.JPG

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, my internet was down.

I searched but could not find what I posted. Either my search skills are not good (most likely), or the forum program switch makes it impossible to find it anymore. I do know that I much prefer the air cylinder lift to the original spring lift. So does my head since I did have a big problem getting the original lift to stay up.

I did fab up the new mounts so that any standard ball mount air cylinder would fit.

I don't know if the new Mud system makes posting pictures any easier, but the old system was a big problem for me since I'm not very computer savvy. If it is easier to post pics I can use my wife's camera and get you some pics.
