The 2x2 is drawn steel. It is what they make receiver hitches out of. Thick wall heavy duty stuff.
It is subtle, but the rig has a 2" body lift. The body lift was done in order to make room for the twin stick shifters as well as the Rock Box shifters.
With the bumper installed the way it is now, I "hide" the 2" gap.
Removing 12 bolts and the entire assembly comes off.
It will still work with my hardtop as well.

The rag caught on fire while I was welding. I didn't even know it.
Wife picked up burning rag and threw in trash can.

It squeaks a little but it is also empty. I will try it out on the 45 Run.
My rearview mirrow is now a place to hang my CB mic since it is no longer used as a rear view mirror.

The stock rear Xmember is doubly thick at those bolt holes, but I would still add some plates on the inside of the frame for strength (that is a lot of leverage)

i was welding next to my trash can and it had empty brake cleaner and spray paint cans in it.i heard this sound and thought " what the heck was that"
lifted the helmet and had a pretty good fire going.
metal trash cans are good.

Why not move the taillight assemblies up to the new bumper so they're a little better protected?

Good question. I originally build the bumper for a CJ and 33"s as outlined in post # 5. I just had the bumper laying around and decided to use it on the FJ.
I should have moved the tail lights into the bumper and I still may do it. I did not have time in my 1 day build.
In hindsite I should would have started with a new 2x4 steel tube so it would be as wide as the FJ.
You could always add some material to th ends.

Well after the 45 Run I found a few things out about my bumper.
It held up extremely well. The pin that holds the Highlift onto the Confer bracket popped out when the jack hit a tree limb. The jack hit the ground and Sine80 picked it up for me.
With the top basket loaded with chainsaw or two and 10 gallons of fuel as well as the rest of the rig loaded with enough camping gear and trail spares to last a few days, it was too heavey.
The basket will be coming off but the tire carrier will stay.
