Made a BIG change in shim to 039. Much better. Still need to fine tune it.
This is the DRIVE side....still a touch too deep.

The Pinion tooth ....drive. Comet tail still a little to the face.

Setting up gears is an art form and this is really cool to see, thank you for sharing. @gemoose23 I think you're in good hands now!

ZUK is the man. Great carnage here, looks like it will be set right.

I feel like Neo in the matrix, I can now set ring and pinion :worms:

@gearinstalls.com cool to see pics of you setting it up. Got pics of your final connect pattern?
Sure do mudgudgeon. :) I tweaked it by removing .003"......I like what this new .036" looks like. Beautiful drive pattern. It's a keeper.

Selected a 025 and 011 to cme up with .036"

The humble tubular widget to press on the new carrier bearing....without any damage ;)
IMG_1157_zpsb89vnqem.jpg~original

.036" DRIVE side. Nice wide load bearing pattern. Not only is it in the sweet spot from
face to flank but also from toe/heel....favoring the toe which is preferred.

Here's the Coast side.....nothing special to say about it.
5 more pics on the way.......

3 of the pinion teeth have some paint on them ....and they are voicing their opinions also.
They say (based on the comet tail in the center) that the depth is set just right.

Here's the 2nd pinion tooth and it's quiet.....
IMG_1163_zpsvwmx51fh.jpg~original

Here's the 3rd tooth and I heard it say stop screwing around and put the crush sleeve in now.
wow.
IMG_1164_zps6w3h9i8b.jpg~original

Here's a final reverse paint on the drive side. Always a good idea to see how the paint looks on the reverse paint...
and it looks fine.

One final disassembly and the crush goes in. George has an auto and 31" tires and 410 gears here
so the crush will last another 20 years. I sure am optimistic :)
Marlin crawler pinion seal is my preferred.

Thanks for the kind words Cruiserdrew.

Just about ready to send it back to Iowa :)

That is pure art my friend.
Yup. Amazing work. Time and time again Zuk has done, shown and proven his artwork..... now I really hope I don't need his services soon, but if i do!

Great thread for someone looking at gear n locker install(my son). When it was installed was the "seating" incorrect because of shim thickness, did that cause the destruction on the outside of the ring gear?its very fair of you to not disclose name. We all meds up. A good shop should stand behind their work though.

Hi Burbot-
Have your son send the diff to me for a proper install....and if he is looking towards a selectable locker then the Harrop elocker is my recommendation. I can get one. I run a Harrop in my front 9.5" and plan to add one in the future to the planned 9.5" upgrade from the stock 8" factory elocker. I would rather call it a "stealth Locker" as the darn thing is so quiet when the switch is thrown.....no motors running....no clicks or clunking on engagement...just very quiet. Nobody knows you have full traction. And, if you have it in the front like I do, after you get done with the tough obstacle section you flip the switch and you're back to easy 1 finger steering again. Well, maybe not 1 finger....

This failure goes way beyond just a loosey goosey pinion shaft (which it was not) .....for the massive inner pinion bearing to explode like that it would require actual damage during the install process. The inner bearing cone was broken up in about 6 pieces and there is no other way to destroy it like that. It was improper seating of the PB. All the other damage was secondary....happened after the bearing went bye bye..... nothing to hold the pinion head in place and it was bouncing back and forth almost an inch. The ring teeth had no choice but to fall away.

I will have a write up with about 68 pics of the carnage and rebuild.

I don't think there is any possible way to get all the metal debri out of the axle housing so it's probably a good idea to change the oil after 100 miles and drain it out while it's HOT. Repeat as needed til it's like honey.
No official break-in as the 410 gears are good oem take-offs.

Found your tech knowledge fascinating and provided lots of insight. Esp the photos with text explaining it. I'm going to check into stealth locker I have oem electrics in my 80 and like them. No compressor makes life easier!

Definitely another Jedi Grand Master.............ZUK is

I've had the beer in Egypt in the yellow cans, and I'm thinking @gearinstalls.com may wish to bring his own beer.

Same offer for Canadian beer here. You could pass on wisdom to "Grasshopper" as we yack I'd love to spend time picking your oversized brain. Thanks I've read the thread 3 times now
