I'm going to a long range tank in the '55 and will need to relocate the spare. What have folks done to get the spare out from underneath and on the rear bumper? I'm looking to build my own, probably with a swing out spare. I have not built a bumper before so I don't know how beefy is too heavy. Strong is good, heavy is not.

Well, mine is both strong and heavy

Search for Tyama's rear bumper thread here in the 55 section.

Very informative. He gave me alot of good info and feedback

edit; sorry, Ty

That can be arranged too if folks are interested. I've got to come up with a bumper/tire carrier design first though. There's lots of folks making bull bars and that sort of thing here so getting them fabbed would be easy.

John, I like the idea of lighter weight steel where strength is not required. Do you have any photos yet? I'd like the rear bumper to be stockish looking with the rounded corners. I'm undecided on whether to include rear quarter protection or not as I'm not sure how that would look on a stockish design.

Another question as well, is the pivot a pre-made item or is it something cobbled together by each person? I can envision using some old trunnion bearings from a front axle rebuild as they are designed to carry the truck load so a spare tire and possibly a gerry can shouldn't be too bad.

Here's mine. Hope it helps.

It's now got a license plate light and a added stop signal on the fuel can carrier. I did it a couple of years ago and have had no problems with it. The gas can carrier is useful for standing on, putting wet gear in, and hauling water cans too. One piece of advise I got was to make sure your tire does not move back and forth a lot on your carrier. If it does, it can weaken the weld and lead to breakage. Best regards, ty
