Yeah, you can take the rear valance off because the rear tail lights are going to be supplied with the bumper, but the tailgate hinges attach to the valance.
So with the Kaymar on, what are the tailgate hinges mounted too.
Also, just FYI, I used a FZJ80 rear undercarriage tire carrier on my 1978 FJ45 and the carrier matched up perfectly. The reason I'm thinking of a bumper/carrier combo is that the 285 underneath the bed sticks out pretty low, I don't currently have a bumper, and I like the looks.
