Can someone please tell me what is wrong here?
One of my rear brakes has been dragging, so I pulled it apart. One side of the slave is seized up, no surprise there.
The adjuster was wound out to maximum, to the point that it had disengaged from the thread and was sitting cock-eyed under the spring pressure (see below).
Closer inspection shows that a PO has welded a nut on the short half to increase its length.
I figured that it must have been the wrong adjuster and they just made it fit, but when I search for a new adjuster online, it looks like the right part (albeit with a nut welded on), although I can't see dimensions it looks the same size.
The shoes look about right, and they're not exactly down to the metal.
Drum doesn't look massively worn either.
Any ideas?

I'm only just realising that most 40s have twin leading shoe on both front and back, so this may not be standard even for the South African market.
Looks more like the later setup with a rear wheel handbrake (which I don't have, and so maybe i need some parts??).
I think you're right, and it's probably wear at all faces adding up to be slack.
I'll get a new adjuster ordered and see if it fits better I guess.

that's was going to me my input. I'm doing my '75 brakes, all around including the master this weekend, and, those don't look like what I"m seeing in the Factory Service Manual.

I've heard that the US spec trucks have parts differences, which is why I stayed away from them as I think you need to get your parts outside the US??

Thanks for the manual link. It certainly looks more similar than my 40 manual.... But... they all show a handbrake lever.

I had a closer look today with the shoes removed, and my backplate doesn't have a hole for the handbrake lever or the cable guide.

To be clear, this is a HJ45 assembled for the South African Market.

I'm guessing that I have some earlier derivative of the 60 series setup without handbrake, and so possibly had an unusual adjuster which has been lost sometime in the last 50 years??

Any Aussies here recognise this setup?

Check megazip.net it lists every component for the entire series.. here's the link to the 40 series ( in this HJ47) it'll come up with diagrams of the component parts.. just entire your ute details...

You're welcome, it looks like the plate is the Japanese export version, probably from an earlier set up. That's about as much as l can tell you.
Best of luck on getting it resolved..

That's awesome thanks! So is either had a new rear axle from a newer HJ47, or if I understand you correctly this may even be the original fitment on my South African '77 45?
Either way it looks like I now know which part I'm looking for at least!

It looks like the only difference is that this part has the anti-rotation clip compared to the much more common -60011 but let's see what arrives...
Thanks again!

Ok so the first part that I ordered has arrived. Looks identical to the picture above except for the clip which is absent.
The good news it that is much bigger than the part that I removed and so does actually work :)

I'll wait for the drum, shoes, and cylinders before assembling it properly, but looks like I'm getting there..

I'm in danger of going down the rabbit hole on this now, but according to the manual I should have 290mm drums all round, all with twin leading shoe.
Actually I have 295mm on the rear with single leading shoe (but no handbrake).

I checked the service limits in the toyota manual for the drum diameter and they should all be 292mm "except for fire trucks" which has a wear limit of 297mm.
I'm guessing therefore that the early fire trucks were fitted with 295mm SLS rear brakes.

Anyone got any experience or info to back this up?
I suspect that my truck may have originally been a police vehicle in South Africa but I have very little info to back that up. Would be nice to know that it actually does have the original brakes after all.
