Rear axle service

Getting geared up to do the rear axle service and wanted to know what was peoples take on the e-brake shoes. What condition are you finding your e-brake shoe in? Should I just figure on replacing the shoes because it’s apart (100k on the Cruiser)?

Does anyone check the run-out on the axles? I have seen some post on the axle splines distorting but nothing on the axles getting twisted or bent.

Unless you ride the p-brakes, they should last a lifetime.

Checking for straightness by rotating the axle against a dial indicator normally postion in the center looking for deflection or bend in the axle.

My pads were fine, the e-brake just needed to be adjusted when I had my brakes looked at.

my e-brake shoes were fine too when I did mine, thick enough I didn't have to worry about them.

E brake pads were fine at 100k or so. They're really only going to show wear if someone along the way accidentally drove off with the parking brakes on. I greased some of the internals a bit (very sparingly) and scuffed the drum and pads lightly with sandpaper, then hit em with brake cleaner and put it together. Both before this and after, I can hold my truck stationary in drive headed down a steep hill with just a moderate pull on the brake lever.

Phill, when I did mine I asked C-dan the same quesiton...he said he's never sold a set.

Mine were fine as well.

I did mine a few weeks ago and asked C-Dan the same question. Basically got the same response as Safado.. I have 99k on mine and the shoes still have plenty of meat left on them..

Just make it a practice not to drive with the e-brake engaged, and you will never have to worry about it...
