I'm welding a baffle in my Diamond rear axle to keep oil from coming out the vent and would like to know which way the ring gear is throwing oil while traveling forward? Is the gear turning towards the front or turning backwards? I'm just assuming towards the front, but what do I know.

Thanks for helping!

Thanks, that's what I thought, but didn't know if there was some trickery happening in the diff.

I have a ring gear question and am not sure if I put it here or create a new threat.
All my ring gear bolts came loose and one shot through the casing. The renaming bolts were snapping when I tried to re-tork them to specs (72-84 ft lb's) and I am thinking they lost integrity do to the years of beating.
The bolts are shallow head 10 x 26 fine thread with no hardness markings. Toyota wants $5 a bolt and I need 16. Fastenal can get me 10 x 25 fine thread 8.8 but the heads are not shallow. Will the fastenal bolts work?

@Angelo

Those are very special high strength bolts. I would only use the Toyota item. But if they came loose, something else is amiss. Ken @gearinstalls.com may have some used bolts lying around, which would be preferable to the fastenal bolts, so email him.

I think though, you should have the entire differential serviced. What you experienced is extremely unusual and I'll bet there is other damage in your rear differential. To stay on the road, you could swap your front differential to the back. Then rebuild the rear differential at your leisure.

Sorry, but no inexpensive way out of this.

I have piles and piles of differential related stuff for Cruisers, years of setting up 3rds
If all you need is the bolts I will give you what you need just pick up the shipping.
If you end up needing other parts let me know.

I don't know how long they were loose for but I have felt a vibration I didn't like for as long as I have had it (5 years), when I take my foot off the gas while coming down a steep hill. Now I'm thinking I finally found it.
Before I got the truck there was an ARB interlock upgrade done. Since the bolts do not have any hardens markings I thought maybe they were made to shear instead of ruining the gear and was wary of even using the 8.8's. Now I'm questioning if they are the right bolts to begin with.
The pounding has left the gear bolt holes slightly elongated. The idea was to tork it down and check it in a month and then in a few more moths, and or till I figured out if I have to replace it.
This is my first time working on a rear so I appreciate all the help.

Well, then you definitely have bigger problems. Since differential work is fairly specialized, and requires special tooling, I recommend you pull the differential from the axle and take it or send it to a good differential specialist. The work will be expensive. It sounds like your bolts were not assembled with locktite and worked loose over time. It is highly likely your gearset is damaged and your ARB locker may be as well.

I can personally recommend Ken @gearinstalls.com . He is the master of Toyota differentials. Go to his site and see what is involved in setting up a differential, and you'll see why I STRONGLY recommend you not tackle this yourself.

The stock Toyota bolts do not have hardness markings, so it's likely your existing ones were the proper ones, either not torqued properly, or no locktite was used.

Good luck, post back what you end up doing.

Thank you. the lockers worked two days before the bolt went through the casing so I might have gotten lucky. I used the e-mail you gave me (Ken@gearinstalls.com) but it came back as undeliverable.

Drew.
I got in touch with Ken. He thinks I can still use my ring gear and sent me to justdifferential.com for new bolts. I couldn't find them on their site but contacted them and gave them the specs. I will have an answer tomorrow on whether or not they have them.
JB Welded the casing and think it will hold up till I can find a new cover.

Wait- something else is going on here. Diamonds have a built in baffle. Did you move the vent location??
