Well, i decided to take the 62 out on the trails for my last day at tech, and found a nice gnarly trail that id never run before. Funky rocky creekbed deal. Anyways, i made it like 3/4 of the way back down the deadend trail when i heard a loud hissssss. Oh yeah, there was a nice 3 inch slash right through the sidewall on my tires. Im getting a ride from a friend back out there right now, but i got a couple questions for you fellas.

1. I dont have a spare, so im tossing one of my stock 30 inch tires on there to get it out to the trailhead. I know that i need to unlock the hubs so i dont burn up my diff, but if i get hung up can i run it in 4wd for long enough to get through the deep ass hole at the end of the trail without burning anything up?

2. Could i get a tire shop to put a tube into my dead tire if i need it to get off the trail? You dont have to drill a second hole for a valve stem do you?

Thanks fellas, speed is of the essence, im headed back out to save my rig in like ten minutes and any help would be great.

tube is ok to get off trail. Take duct tape contact cement and an assload of tire plugs too. Seen a tsidewall stuffed w/ 23 plugs once just to get off the trail.

let us know how it goes!

Locker? If no you can go short dist. w/ ofset tire sizes. wouldn't reccomend road miles though.

No locker, and i would try the plug and duct tape method but i got no air compressor. All i have to do is swap one of my dinky spares and make its 400 yards to the trailhead. Ill have someone there to give me a snatch if i get stuck, hope it doesnt get dark soon. I just gotta get that s*** off the trail, ive seen a jeep left out there get absolutely destroyed in the couple weeks it was sitting. The only good thing is its a pretty gnarly trail, and i think anyone with a rig who could make it there would have the decency and understanding to leave it alone.

If its on the front you will be fine with it unlocked on the trail. I think even in the sand / mud you will be fine for being locked in, just have to be real careful and not lock it in on solid ground. If you do that you will tear it up.

Well, me and the truck made it home in one peice. I managed to get a hold of some friends of a friend with a hi-lift and i swapped on one of my P235s to get me home. It took some serious spotting to get me back in one peice though, that trail was no joke. I ran it back to the trailhead in 2wd just to be safe, but i had to throw it into 4wd when i got the rear axle hung up on a rock. Its all good though, i made it home, i bought insurance on my tires so i get a new tire for free, and i learned a lot about where my truck needs its next upgrades. Thanks for the quick responses fellas, you helped out a lot. Ill post some pics of the friggen slash through the sidewall when i get home. I wouldnt say the sidewall was weak even though i cut it, it only broke through to the inside on a small part of the cut, and it took about 30 seconds for all the air to escape. This was at 12 psi btw. You should have seen the rock that did it, it was a long flat rock sticking out of the wall of the rut, and a little 2 inch chuck had broken off, making a knife like spear that killed my tire.

Good to hear... I wish I was still in town so I could have helped out.

Its cool, if you really feel bad about it lets go wheeling when your s*** gets fixed and you can help me fix whatever i break then. Sound good? Oh, and you COULD donate one of your used up 34s for a spare but thats an entirely different story.

Matt
