real time help, throw out bearing? SBC sm465

Hi 71 fj55 sbc/sm465
My issue is it sounds like grinding/vibrating in the tranny/t case. But stops when clutch is pressed will still shift and act normal
I think its the throw out bearing. I'm at my dads place but cant get home so i'm going to pull it and find out.
What works best the short t/o bearing or the long?
Any part numbers? It has the luk clutch set up in there right now.
Aluminum bell housing what about clutch fork ball shims?

Howdy! If it was working OK for you before it went bad, just pull it out and match it up at a parts house. They should be able to supply either one by just looking at it. John

Is this a normall sound for a t/o bearing? I feel (vibration) it in the tranny and t/case just by turning it (tcase) by hand. I have it all loose now so will find out in an hr or so.

If some of the balls have broken up/fallen out of the bearing, then it will make really nasty sounds and vibs. But, it could be a bearing in the front of the transmission. After you pull it out, turn it all by hand to see if you can definitely locate the problem. The T/O bearing should be pretty obvious if it is bad. John

not the t/o bearing..... its good so I took a wooden dowl stuck it to my ear then turned the tcase and tranny the vibes are coming from the tcase its a 3 speed so now i'm going into the tcase......... what are common problems with them???????????
anybody in Reno know of any cruiser stores??

OK. At least you have it narrowed down. I am willing to bet it is the needle bearings in the intermediate shaft in the transfer case. That is the middle one. You can see the shaft end sticking thru the case. It tends to wear down the needles and the shaft when the front seal goes back and it starts pumping all the gear oil back into the transmission( or if it has a bad gasket leaking out on the ground). It could be other things, but I have had this wear out on two cases so far. It is an automatic replacement item for me now. I always pull it down and check it. John

It sounds like you already have the tranny and tcase out of the vehicle. To separate the tcase from the tranny, you
1) Remove the black cone shaped metal cover from the back of the tcase and remove the nut behind it. If you have a SBC you probably already removed the cover with the cross mount. My SM420 has this nut, Stock has it. Not sure about the 465.
2) Remove the 3 large bolts seen at the back of the tcase.
3) If you are like many, at this time you would get the hammer and pry bar and try to muscle the tcase away from the tranny. It must really be stuck on there.
4) DON’T.
5) Remove the driver side inspection plate and remove the two short bolts inside the tcase which are now the only thing holding the tcase to the tranny. Actually you may want to swap step 2 and 5. These can be a bugger to get out.
6) Now you may or may not need to pry a wee bit to move the shaft off the rear bearing, if the 465 uses this bearing. Some conversions use a washer with a bolt at the end of the shaft to hold the gear on.
7) Watch out for the input gear, spacer or square cut PTO gear and washers falling out the inspection cover hole.

Go to Specter Off-Road, Inc.-Landcruiser Parts & Accessories or Man-A-Fre Advance Off-Road Solutions to see exploded tcase diagrams. Once you have done that either search this site for tips, buy a chiltons manual, or ask specific questions about how to dismantle the tcase.

There is a Toyota dealer in Reno or Sparks and a Napa dealer and I think CarQuest in Truckee

Next problem is the cast fork retaining spring broke and now I'm having a heck of a time finding one
nobody carries the spring.. the dealer napa none
who would carry it?

I assume it's a chevy clutch fork. There are a number of auto dismantlers (junk yards) in the area and down towards Carson City. You might also try a transmission repair place.

reno brake and clutch said they have it I have to put the tranny back then take the tcase off then turn the shafts to see what continues to make the noise but im sure its the case

having trouble getting the tranny back on the motor. I have the solid bearing at the back of the motor could that have fallen out?? I dont think so what else would make it hard to put back? I have 2 bolts in but just seems hard to tighten.. grrrrrrr....

Could be that some of the clutch parts have drifted off center. You may need to get a clutch alignment tool to straighten it out. the brass bushing/bearing in the flywheel should be the same as when you took it apart. John

that nut at the back of the tcase under the black cone is a nylon nut can I reuse it once I get it out?

That's not a good sign. I think that should be a steel staked nut. Probably not easy to find locally. Dealer, or C Dan maybe?

rear bearing on the tcase just behind the cone cover?
I have the case 1/4 inch loose but just doesnt want to come completly off, do I need to pry harder? I dont want to mess anything up and create more work.

update
not tcase not adapter pulled them and they are smooth

tranny is the culprit sounds like the rear bearing is it possible to pull the rear shaft?
gray oil came out (water)
what are common problems with the sm465?
maybe start a new thread?

Howdy! Yea, I forgot about the 465 and adapter, so the nylock nut may be normal. Watery gear oil is a bad sign for the whole transmission. Could be any/all bearings with extraordinary wear/damage. Might be cheaper to go find another tranny at the picknpull.

Gonna pull the top cover off in the morning. A guy stopped by and said that the rear bearing is gone and he has the tool to get into it. said to pull the top cover off to see if anything else is bad.
napa should have parts for the sm4645 right?????

can I reuse the nylon nut?? it has only been in there 1 yr
