Real time help needed! I'm in Frisco, CO and my starter is failing. I went out to start the truck, turn the key...nada. So I wait a few minutes and turn the key again...starts right up.

Anyone have any ideas to help me get this replaced before the weekend? I'm on vacation and need to be out of this place on Saturday morning before starting the next leg of our trip.

This is a paradox. that you can troubleshot and determine that your starter is bad , but you can't replace the starter, that just not right.
you sure it is not a battery?
... in this rigs replacing a battery or a stater take same among of afford .

Removing starter:
0. remove battery positive clamp terminal so the is 0 electricity.
1. unbolt the cable connector from the starter and remove the wire away from the starter.
2. unbolt 2 mounting bolts on the starter. (that is it)

Installing starter:
0. bolt on 2 mounting bolts on the new starter.
1. connect starter cable and bolt it in.
2. connect the battery positive terminal. (that is it)

you can do this on the parking lot take 30 min max, get there and do it yourself this is a small job and you can do it.

I don't think he has a replacement starter, yet?

Check your fusible links first. Wiggle them to see if it fixes it.
Then your battery. Is it fully charged?
Then the starter.

Odds are it's #1.

Are you getting a click when you turn the key over? I was having a similar problem where it would click, all lights on the dash worked but it would not start. Replaced starter, battery, fusible links, checked ground to motor (which was loose) and still had the problem. After getting some great help here on the site, i purchased a kit from painless performance and no problems since. Below is the link to the help here on the site.

Starter clicks and no start

No clicks or anything from the starter
Battery is less than 1yr old and confirmed has a good charge

When you say fusible links, are you referring to anything that connects to the battery that has a fuse?

No. There is a set of fusible links attached to the positive battery terminal that control all of the circuits to the truck to protect them if there is a failure of something to keep from burning the truck to the ground. When they get old and brittle, they start to crack and fail. It is Toyota P/N 90982-08264
Look for the black box shown in the picture attached.

I can see your problem right there on the RED wire. The insulation is melted and everything is VERY crunchy!

Go buy TWO sets so one goes in the glove box and one gets installed!

Working on tracking the part down now!

PN 90982-08264 looks like it doesn't replace that red wire that's almost bare. Do you know which PN the red wire is?

Red wire doesn't look factory to me?

Not on my 97.

The red looks li ke some auxillary business not part of the fusible link but not sure. Checking my truck now

That red wire is something someone (PO) cobbled in there and removed the "fusible" part of the link because they probable smoked it. You're lucky the truck hasn't burned down....

The CORRECT color for that wire is BLUE.

Yeah, the fuse link is 3 wires, black blue pink.

I can throw you my spare from Michigan. Ready.........catch!

Based on that, you MAY need to replace or rebuild the starter due to the solenoid contacts being burned / worn.

I installed an Optima starter from O'Reilly because I needed one. Eventually, I will have a well-built factory rebuilt Denso in my possession. Make sure your buy the 2.2kW starter, not the 1.2kW version.
