My bro in law is leaving for a week of skiiing in British Columbia and his PS pump started whining yesterday. To get him through the trip, I want to do the Downey trick but cannot find any specifics as to quantity to add, or type of Downey (there are various scents, detergents, etc).

Can anyone definitively pin this down for me? I've got perhaps 60 minutes for this. Thanks!

I did a capful and it worked, current cap in laundry room is appx 1.5 teaspons, may have been different size bottle/cap. I would maybe try Cdan's 1 Tsp first.

Thanks! Dunno why that thread did not come up on the searches I did.

I used a capful also, no more whine.
Don't recall if I even looked at the scent.

I can smell you from here....April Fresh Scent, with a hint of lavender :flipoff2:

:grinpimp:

Thanks, he's off - whining should reduce a bit as they drive.

He left the family behind then?

Being curious, I looked at the MSDS for Downey fabric softener. The MSDS does not list all of the components ("trade secrets" can be omitted). Here is what was listed:

Hydrochloric acid (CAS# 7647-01-0)
Ethanol (CAS# 64-17-5)
Copper dinitrate (CAS# 3251-23-8)
Ethyl acrylate (CAS# 140-88-5)
Acrylic acid (CAS# 79-10-7)
Isopropyl alcohol (CAS# 67-63-0)
Acetic acid (CAS# 64-19-7)
Toluene (CAS# 108-88-3)
Sodium (CAS# 7440-23-5)
Formaldehyde (CAS# 50-00-0)
2-Phenoxyethanol (CAS# 122-99-6)

We put that toxic concoction on our clothes?

yes, and worse, the 64-17-5 you ingest frequently in all likelihood...!

hmm sevedral of those are corrosive.

Hydrochloric acid is corosive
Acetic acid is more comonly known as the most active ingredent in vinigar, is corosive,
ethenol is mildly corrosive,
acrylic acid is corosive
sodium can be corrosive
Formaldehyde iscorossive

not sure if these are still corossive in the presence if oil, I wich I knew more aobut chemistry.

Just talked to him, and the pump has been silent the whole trip. 300,000 miles on it. Uncanny.
