Having stupidly left my gas cap at the last stop, I'm in search of something that'll work to get me home (in the middle of a trip from CA home to UT). There's an O'Reily's in the town we stayed in overnight, and I'm going to see what they have. Any ideas of what to ask for?

I'll get a Toyota one when I'm back home, but it would be nice to have something on there for the rest of the trip.

I might have done that one time, on a trip to southern Utah... :whoops:

I found a helpful NAPA auto parts store in Vernon, TX that actually looked up the sizes in the catalog and pulled a bunch until we found one that fit. The rub is, I don't remember what exactly it was made for - an American car though, a Buick or Olds? It fit the fill tube perfect but had a big sheet metal lid that wouldn't let the the fuel door on the 40 close. Used it for parts of two days until I stopped at American Toyota in Albuquerque and they had the correct one in stock (unlike all the other dealers I stopped at on the way). Sorry I can't be more specific but I feel your pain.

I think I got one at Pep Boys.

I've done this twice now and have found a suitable replacement at O'Reilly. Like 1911, I don't recall what it was from, but they are available at most auto parts stores if the guy behind the counter is willing to look.

Right now, I'm using duct tape.

I bought a "Stant" one recently from the jobbers. Stant P/n 10806.

It's a vented cap and I believe it was listed to at least fit a Landcruiser... Maybe not a 1974 Fj40 though.

I gave Toyota a p/n I found here on mud, and they told me it would be $17 bucks (or something like that)... Had to pay in advance, it was non-refundable, and they couldn't even tell me if it would fit.

Parts Locator

Lists Stant 10806 as stock for your 1976... If you can find a Suplier that sells them.

Thanks again for all the ideas, they were much appreciated.

A very helpful parts counter guy at the O'Reillys in Elko, Nevada drilled a small hole in the cap I had found earlier. They didn't have anything that would work that we could find, so this did the trick well enough to get me home. I'll be making my first call to Cruiser Dan on Monday to get a new cap along with a few other things.

Maybe too late but this might help.

For my 2-'75 40.

Car Quest vented gas cap part #34015.

Any parts store should be able to cross reference that #.

Good luck.

why the "vented" gas cap? Isn't the breather hose enough...

It certainly wasn't enough on mine. I put the non-vented cap on, and after a mile or two the truck started to buck like it was out of fuel. Opened the cap and there was a bit "woosh" as the vacuum was released. Putting the hole in the cap solved the issue.

Stock configuration has a valve that allows air in, but not out. Preventing gas fumes and liquid from splashing out when wheeling or cornering.
