So my 4.88 ARB'd third member is toast. The gears are fine, but the locker itself was destroyed from a seized cross/spider gear. I need to decide what to do next. Should I rebuild the diff with a new ARB (at cost) or move in a different direction and build a different axle? I could always throw a junkyard third member in there for a while while I build a different axle. I would like to build an axle that will last forever, since I've already been down this road once. Any ideas or opinions?

The Cruiser in question is my street driven fj62 SOA on 37s. Although it is seeing less and less street miles these days, I still plan on driving long distances from time to time.

You could build a semi float 35 spline D60 with ARB and chevy 1/2 ton disk brakes for about $2,000. I built my E-locked toy rear with 4.88 gears, full floater conversion, chromoly shafts, and supra disk brakes. And after all that money the freakin toy housing got bent. So I parted it out and built my D60 for a lot less and love it. I know a lot of people want to stick with all toy parts that is cool too. I just like to spend my time wheelin not fixing.

I'm thinking I should have the diff rebuilt with a new locker regardless of what direction I go. Since I can get the locker at cost, I should be able to turn around and sell the setup third member for a few hundred more than I put into it. What would a 4.88 new ARB third go for these days?

Hi All:

I helped a buddy last year with a similar situation - blown spider gear tooth kept the Air Locker from unlocking. Rig is a FJ60 running on 33X12.5 BFGs. Happened at Rubithon :D

Got the 'locker re-built by the friendly folks at ARB-USA, installed it on the R&P set, then bolted-up the 'third to the axle housing. No worries, it works fine.

Regards,

Alan

The problem w the Dana 60 is its a centered diff axle...gonna have to cut one side down. put a Detroit full size locker in it and forget about it. Its plenty strong!

X2. That's what I did on my 40 - cut down pass side & ordered a Moser short side shaft. On my :pig: I went w/ a narrowed 14 bolt. Major improvement on R & P size. If you go full float, I'd look for some D60 6 lug hubs on Ebay or HighHonda on Pirate may have some (Vendors Section). Make sure your center hole in your wheels will fit over the O.D. of the outer D60 hub housing. Semi float you'll just have to have the axle flange redrilled for 6 lug.

I'm actually considering going the route you did and build a 35 spline cruiser axle. Can it be done cost effectively?

Haven't added up the co$t yet :meh: I 35 splined the inners in the FRONT, rebroached RD33 & had my R & P cryo-rimmed. I decided on the 30 spline outers cuz I fear for the LC R & P. I wouldn't do it in the rear for a heavy wagon. You need the thickness of the D60 R & P back there runnin that size of a tire, IMO :D

I'm a Cruiser purist .. so my solution it's 100% Cruiser, like a 61 Series FF rear axle with your rebuild ( all part of any ARB can be source with ARB USA ) your ARB fitt your R&P .. and life happy.

that still wont get rid of the part that failed on your ARB, maybe it was a bad one, or ran low on oil? the Home Grown Race Rig has a 35 spline Cruiser 3rd running 42's and they sheer of the pinion every once in a while.

if your hammering on your Wagon hard i would look at a 60 or a 14b.. i like the idea of 6 lugs on a 14b, that would be cool!
