A couple of the plugs I pulled have this RED patina on the insulator...COOLANT::confused:

Checked the valves last night and they were very close to spec, the real issue is the thing failed smog, is running rich, I can't get it registered because of the smog issue and I don't know jack about setting a carb... Put new NGK plugs in last night and did an oil change, but the exhaust just wreaks of CO which is the test I failed (at idle).

P.S. IDAVE Nailed it, the guy I bought the rig from used a lead additive in the gas, which explains the RED...MMT...cool, don't even know if lead should be added to each tank?

it's my understanding that the F motor should have leaded gas....or additives. the reason being, they do not have hardened valve seats.

Just quoting the gurus here, but, despite their era, F engine valve seats were "hardened" from the factory and don't need anything added as far as that goes. That should not be a concern.

The CO issue can be solved in one of two ways.

Run your gas tank down to a 1/4 (or drain to there), and then put 5 gal of E85 in and run for about 10 miles to get it into the system. Go through emissions with almost 0 CO, and then go fill it up with regular gas and run it for at least 10 miles to get the E85 out of the carb and fuel lines, as it will eat the rubber seals.

Alternative: go to Walgreens and buy a couple of bottles of rubbing alcohol and dump them into a quarter tank of gas or less. Then repeat above.

Retarding the timing might also do the trick.
