Rattling sound that's driving me nuts

to give ya'll an update. I replaced my head down pipes to the cats and I still have the rattling. I had a mechanic drive it and he ruled out the rod bearings so that was good. but this has been going on too long and I am determine to find it. I swear by the time I do find the cause I would of replaced everything under the hood. I do have a new exhaust now so that's kinda cool.

any other ideas or thoughts?

Motor mount? Check the drivers side motor mount and the shield COVERING the steering box

I removed the shield covering gear box and still made the noise so I ruled that out. I am going to check the motor mounts next.

I read this and it reminded me of the incessant rattle I had when I got my 62 in Aug.It took a while to figure it out.Turned out to be the alternator rattling on the pivot bolt.

yea I read that post a while back and I plan on digging deeper this weekend and that is one area I plan on looking at.

I had the same rattle last spring. After a month of trying to figure it out I removed the cat. converter and some of the media had broke loose and was rattling around - but only when I let off the accelerator
at 40 m.p.h. +. I gutted the cat converter, reinstalled it and it runs like a top again.

well I get this rattle in 1st - 4th and everything in the middle. I am about to crawl under it again for the 100th time this month.

ok, I crawled under the truck and took a rubber mallet and I couldn't find that rattle. it seems loud today. once again at idle or at a stop nothing but as soon as I give it some gas bam! now after doing some listening it rattles before the truck is completely warm. thoughts?[/QUOTE]

My wife's pathfinder had the exact same thing...once the truck warms up it goes away...The problem: One of the exhaust manifold bolts broke off...

ok...so now I am going to remove one heat shield at a time. I just took off the one under the drivers seat. Is it ok to drive around without a heat shield? does it just warm up the cab faster?

are you sure you're not pinging?

X2 It is pinging. Put some higher octane gas in it or retard the timing a bit and see if it goes away.

pin why would higher octane gas make a ping go away? I put a can of seafoam in it two weeks ago and nothing changed. the sound doesn'r get louder or change rythem the faster I go.

still rattling. i am now leaning towards the torque converter. i didn't notice the noise too much this winter but as things are starting to warm up here in dallas i am noticing it alot more. But that might have to due with me driving more with my window down. i am really starting to dislike my 62 more and more.

I am going to keep glued to this thread. My 88 62 was doing the same thing. When I put my foot on the gas, it rattled/pinged like crazy. Let off the gas, silence. Then it blew a head gasket. I dont know if it still going to be doing it when I get it back from the shop this weekend, but I will let you know.

I feel for you. I spent a night in Limon last year, but by choice. On my way back home I choose to keep driving.

Yeah - Limon is definately NOT a town a person chooses to go to - unless it is out of necessity. I get to go back Saturday for my truck - that should be fun.

I would go back to the heat shield. Take it to a muffler shop and put it on a lift. You can usually get it to repeat by reving it up. A simple spot weld will stop it. I have seen this numerous times on 80's and 100's but no experience with the 62. SHould be the same
