I am going to crawl under the truck today and take a look. would this be has to see if ther was a crack?

ok, I crawled under the truck and took a rubber mallet and I couldn't find that rattle. it seems loud today. once again at idle or at a stop nothing but as soon as I give it some gas bam! now after doing some listening it rattles before the truck is completely warm. thoughts?

I have the same thing on my 62. On my 62 the exhast pipe has started coming apart at the seam and was causing the noise. so I would inspect the pipe very closely, mine was at the rear about where the ds tire is.

are you sure you're not pinging?

.

thinkin the same thing put super and FI cleaner in it and see what it does mine Pings rattle like sound under load if i use cheap gas

The torque converter may be on its way out....... been there before....:frown:... but usually some vibration will be noticed also, but that could come a bit later on.... that why I ask about vibration in a earlier post.....

I don't get a vibration just a GD rattle. It might be a ping sound but i haven't heard that before. I was going through very old post i have had on this forum and i mentioned this same issue a little over a year ago. I don't have any issues with power performance....just freaking NOISE!!!

That t-converter thing hits close to home with me :frown: but it turned out to be a cracked flywheel :whoops: flex plate ;)

I am going through the truck top to bottom....

check your transfer case linkages,i had one that rattled only when driving, shimmed it with a coke can,but didnt last, quite common on older 60's im told.
cheers goldchaser

sometimes a very small exhaust leak can sound like a rattle and or a pinging type noise.
maybe rev it up a lil while your listenin - sp? to it. or if you can get someone to hold the brake and drop it in gear and give it some slight gas to simulate a load condition that should rule out even a small exhaust leak quite quickly.

describe a pinging sound and what would cause that.

rattling is GONE! After checking and rechecking everything from heat shield to cat to every little bolt I finally nailed the problem...hole in the top of my muffler. I went back to the shop that installed it about 9 months ago and they put on a new muffler. nothing mechanical at all and I am very pleased with that. when I drove home tonight from work she sounded like a new cruiser. I want to thank everyone for all the help and guidance.

Glad you found it. My rattle is coming from a split seam on my exhasut pipe, hard to find the cause of my rattle and it drove me nuts also. Guess toyota just does not make an exhast/muffler that last 20 years

still have the sound. sounds like its coming from the engine bay in the middle somewhere.

Your motor mounts in good condition? Any metal(frame) to metal(engine) contact anywhere?

now that is one area I haven't looked at. this morning it was pretty cold in dallas and I don't know if that has anything to do with it but I didn't hear it this morning until about 25 minutes after driving.

you drove the metal got hot and allowed it to expand making the what sounds to be a small exhaust leak more prominent

Give someone a ride who knows who knows the sound of spark knock.

Or as a test, retard your timing. Catch-22...

Well i had a buddy in the car yesterday and he said it sounded like a rattling instead of pinging. There is no rythem to the rattling. No performance issues when it does rattle. Only happens when it gets warm. I am starting to lean two the two exhaust pipes that come from the manifold to the cats.
