Rain leak into cabin

Have been chasing leaks, and the DS one on mine was definitely leaking under the heavy rains lately. It was warped slightly and water was passing through to the headliner, down the A-pillar and into the wiring and carpet! I decided to pull the dust covers and add a thick bead of FIPG all around to seal them up...should keep the water out now...passed the hose test.

On a related note, does anyone know if the actual rubber seal around the sunroof glass is available? Mine is definitely not sealing, adding more water to the drain-system than I would like.

Steve

you can't get just the seal. You have to buy the entire glass with the seal, or shim the original with a section of bike inner tube. mine was hoes so I bought the glass from Cdan. It was around $350 shipped but I have no more leaks.

94 FZJ80.

When it "rains" ( e.g., 2 inches per hour) passenger side of cabin has water, right edge where carpet is pinned under threshold trim.

Have sealed the trim & holes at cargo window.

Have poured 'some' water in sun roof trough; saw it readily drain from 4 locations under rig - carpet didn't get damp.

Would like to get to location where drain lines join trough...how ? FSM not very detailed....pull door trim & unpeel headliner from door frame ?

back to the 'leak' , where else to look ?

TIA

Pete

Dang IT! I have a leak. During heavy rains, I get a leak (driver side) in 2 spots ... 3 inches above where the seat-belts attaches to the pillars on the doors (front and rear door). It just seeps out from the pillars. I pulled the carpet below and it's dry down there. Any one have this issue?

the issue on my 94' is a bad fit for the glass... man it's like a 1/4 inch... not leaking really though... i like the idea to just move it with the lift button... on the 97' i had i did end up putting the silicon to it eventually, but just to ease my mind on the dvd player... one thing i would recommend to everybody on the a-pillar issue is go behind the kick panel on the driver side bottom there and look where the drain line comes down to the rocker and right before it makes that turn you will see a ton of wiring stuff... the wiring will sometimes flatten the drain hose over time with it all stuffed in there like it is... i took a zip tie, heated up the hose just a bit to regain shape, and tied it into a circle shape with the zip maintaining it... saw it on a post here and that was indeed my leaking issue... water would run down the carpet soaking front to back right above the rocker... i was hoping there was an adjustment on the glass for my bad fit... the gap for me is toward the back... also the hose for one guy i read back when i was working on the 97' had pulled away from the little mount right at the drain points... it's always a journey to find leaks ! thanks for the help guys

Leak from dust cover

Soggy
Just pulled my right dust cover off. You have to negotiate around the air-bug shield that pops up when you open the skylight but should be easy to locate the phillips screw and dust cover underneath the right side of the shield. It's, of course, the same for the left side.
This first pic shows the new and old (broken) dust cover and the orientation. The second pic shows more clearly the warp that occurs with heat and time and how water, hitting the cover becomes diverted into the headliner and consequently toward the "a pillar".View attachment 339441

Just for reference, here are pics of where these guys live:

reviving this as I saw it in another post. BIG thanks cardreader for posting this. My PS leaked ONLY when I would go through a car wash, then it would flood down onto the PS seat. The first time was while Mrs. CY was in the seat, it wasn't pretty :) She was soaked and had to go home so she could change. I had already snaked my lines, including pulling back the headliner and double/triple checking all my drains and tubes were clear. I even replaced my sunroof glass thinking the felt/rubber not being completely pliable was the cause. It wasn't and I was at a loss.

When I removed the above piece, it was badly bent (see pic below). Furthermore, it appears that Mr T made a change from the earlier models (91-94) and enhanced the later versions. There is now a sponge-like barrier as well as a lip on the backside to prevent backflow.

I have a couple pics below that shows the difference. The old one is the PS and the other is the DS, but you can see the difference. Bottom line, if you have a 91-94, this is a must-do upgrade.

My old 94 is one the left, the 97 one is on the right. Notice the lack of the sponge-like material as well as the lip on the top edge as well as it having a larger footprint.

This is a T with my 94 on top. You can see how bad the curve was, which allowed water to pour in when a massive amount of water was encountered (like a car wash)

I don't have much of the sponge material under the screw head. Perhaps I should just seal it?

I built up a shallow wall or Dam using 3M strip caulk alongside the drain pan under the plastic cable covers (after first flattening the covers using a heat gun).

Cool Breeze- I know this thread is from a long time ago but I'm having the same issue now with my '97 FJ80 and I don't know how to source those parts- everywhere I look they are no longer available. Can you give me an idea of where you found the dust covers, or maybe the contact info for your "local guy"? Thanks!

This was the first problem that I addressed when I landed my 80 last winter. It gets pretty wet here in So. Oregon at that time and I noticed "soggy" carpets after hard rains. I researched this forum and went through the all of the suggested problem areas (drains, windshield etc.). Nothing seemed to solve it.
About three weeks ago I tried it again by soaking the skylight area with water from a garden hose and the water began to seep into the "a pillar". I then opened the skylight and immediately found the problem. It was a very easy fix for me and I hope for others too.
So, open the skylight and climb up in there from the interior. Facing the front of the vehicle, you will notice that on the left and right front of the skylight mechanism and above the drain pan (right there on the top) there are what the dealer called "cable dust covers" held in place by a single phillips screw. These innocuous little things were the root of my problem... no more leaking.
Remove one of the little buggers (probably the one on the right, since you're leaking on that side) and lay it down on a flat surface. If it does not lay flat but shows some upward warp or is cracked or damaged in any way, replace it. Only $10.00 a piece from the dealer (no doubt, cheaper from CDan). Let me know what you find and if it solves your leak, I'll do a little write up with some pics.
Hey Soggy I just wanted to say thanks, I've been suffering from this issue with my recent fj80 purchase, and this 10 years after this original post, and I addressed the dust covers with a bead of silicone until the new ones show up, and this SEEMS to have fixed my leak- thanks so much!!!

were you able to ever find the sunroof clip pieces.
I suspect mine are leaking in the same spot but the part appears discontinued.

I guess I will attempt to seal the clip pieces off with rtv unless you can advise otherwise.
