What’s happening my 80 series kin!

91 FJ80
3FE
JDM

Been dealing with an “over heating” problem for a while now. This morning on my coffee run all gauges jumped up to the red, started smoking out the radiator. Been trouble shooting this for awhile now and she’s actually been pretty good for the past year. Only problems I run into is 2+ hours of driving and she starts loosing power and just stutters when I press on break. Pull over-Turn her off for a minute or 2 (literally a minute or 2) then she runs fine again. - this is most likely a separate issue, just mentioning it for context/back story or whatever, can’t hurt to mention u know lol.

Anyway I’m posting right now because Im going to just replace my radiator. It’s been on my list and now seems like a better time as any lol. I’m reading and hearing a lot of mixed things about which radiator to get and which is best and everything I’ve read has helped but want to just confirm with u guys. I’m read pretty much every forum on here before posting this just to lyk.

EDIT: also fan not spinning either... and I posted this from my phone after i logged in on my laptop i saw I actually already posted something about radiator lol but please still help

Question:
1. OEM vs CSF vs summit
2. Aluminum vs brass?- pros and cons?
3. Do any above radiators require additional work besides just swapping it out?
4. Anything else I should know, be thinking about or keep in mind?

I really appreciate any help or really just anything lol. Really love this community so thanks in advance.

Likely a clogged pre-filter on the fuel pump.

Are you referring to the belt driven cooling fan mounted to the water pump?????
If that's not spinning with the engine, then you have more issues than just the radiator. Is the belt there?

@jonheld oooo i didnt even think about the prefilter on the fuel pump. I replaced fuel pump about a year maybe little over year ago.

Cooling fan up at the radiator so yeah by/attached to water pump. (That just happened today, never before) I replaced the fan clutch, water pump, thermostat all about a year - little under a year ago. Which really helped. All 3 belt new, that was one the first things i did - about 2-3 years ago. Check tension ware and tear on belts all the time, probably replace next year or year after just to keep them nice.

So the fact its not spinning means i defiantly have more issues then just the radiator lol. Any idea what those other issues might be?

Im working right now, but next thing im going to see about checking is maybe one the hoses is clogged...? - probably to airpump...?. Im also just going to replace a lot of if not all the hoses and completely flush coolant.

Any thoughts/advise/things i should also check and see?

Btw thanks so much for the response - really helpful

If the belts are there and the water pump rotates with the engine, then something is mechanically preventing the fan from moving.
If the water pump was seized, the belt would smoke.

You need to look inside the engine bay and try to rotate the fan by hand with the engine off.
Maybe the radiator blew out and is hitting the fan.
Maybe the fan shroud was not installed correctly.

Impossible to diagnose without putting eyeballs on the situation, but it should reveal itself rather quickly.

OEM radiators are still available, for US market 80 series, you might be able to find one through a local Toyota dealer. You could also check Partsouq (middle east) or any of the Japanese parts distributors (impex, amayama, yoshi, japan 4x4 to name a few).
If you can find an OEM radiator, that would be my purchase.

Not for the 3FE. Discontinued at least 10 years ago.

What brand do people recommend to buy for 91-92?
I don't know what the flavor of the week is. A search on this forum would reveal the experience of others. There are many posts on this topic for the 3FE.

FYI
With the belt off the water pump should spin easily by hand.
I have used a spare timing belt over the crank and water pump to drive hours in darkness on a cross Canada trip until I could find a shop open with belts. Mind you this was an hzj75 with Led lights.
Engine speed was limited as the belt could only slip on, and higher speeds increased the fan blade resistance
