What are the differences in these two transmissions? I know that the 151f is the turbo transmission, but is it stronger than the 150? I am thinking of doing the lexus v8 swap and will need a R series transmission for the adapter.

The way I understand it, they are essentially the same tranny inside, the R15F just has slightly different ratios, a much lower 1st gear, which is why they are so desirable. I'm not sure if the R150F uses the 23-spline input to the transfer though, and the Marlin Crawler website seems to be down now.

The FSM covers both trannys in the same section, so the R&R procedure is the same.

Would the 150 have about the same 1st gear as the w56? If it is close I think I would be fine with the 150 since the 151 is so damned expensive.

I'm sure the ratios are out on the web somewhere to lookup. My usual reference is Marlin, he is THE MAN on this stuff. But for some reason his site won't come up for me. I hope it didn't get hacked again.

I tried marlin first but as you said it was down. I will keep searching.

151 = 4.31 first
150 = 3.83 first

I *think*

Both are 23 spline outputs, but don't forget that the 150 has a different bolt pattern, so you need an adapter to bolt it to a gear drive 4-cyl tcase... 151 doesn't need this adapter.

That sucks that I would need an adapter plus an input. I guess I will keep looking for the 151.

Why? Buy the adapter from Jim @ Inchworm and a 23 spline input and have a much stronger combination than a W or G series / 21 spline setup. I've owned three of these (2 w/ Marlin adapters, 1 w/ Inchworm). Work great.

I will try to find an r151f so I won't have to get another adapter plus the 23 spline input.

Oh, and just to make ya'all sick ... here is a pic of a R151F plus a pair of 23 spline transfercases ready to bolt into my 4Runner some day. :D

Pappy, How to I put this...? It's "nice" to have you around.... But sometimes..... your input is just not necessary.... Turd! :D Now we all have tranny envy.... (Did that sound weird?) Hehehe You're a lucky guy!

I'll take that only in the nicest way. Now I just need to get off my arse and get the chunk installed.

Same ex, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears

What are your plans?

If I wanted a HD'er tranny and did not mind the chain drive in lets say a 4cyl truck I would find a Turbo 2x4 (more common than a 4x4) and just swap the BH, but I think your building a hard core offroader so......yeah, look for a 151f

also marlin 2MK has the 1,2 and 3 gear set$ to convert them to 4.31: blah, blah but after all that you'd still have chain drive

unless your the sultan of Brunei,,,,$$$$ to get to gear drive (T.C)

150 V6, HD tranny all have chain drive TC (all AT's and all V6's have chain) standard gears

Chain is lighter and slightly lower geared

151f HD "Granny" tranny 4.31:1 so the turbo would spool faster, my guess ;p

Meh... I have the same thing in my basement right now, except that mine's all torn apart. Well, I'm sticking with a single case for now. Marlin has 4.7 23-spline gear sets on back order.

Just something to consider. Sometimes it's easier to find the tranny, than it is the bellhousing. The tranny is a worthless chunk without the 22R bellhousing. Two years ago they were still available from Toyota ... for a price. When I bought mine there were none in the US, and it had to come from Japan.

Hate to resurrect an old thread but is there an "R151" and "R151F" out there? I know some sites may just not be putting the F at the end of the transmission but wanted to know if there is two different R151's that I should look out for
