That's why I have 5100s. Rubber bushings and an otherwise "non-exotic" 2 inch single tube design is very reliable while being a solid upgrade over oem for my application.

Those Icons are yester-years class 8 race shocks, from my perspective. Those were designed to be rebuilt in the off season. I know they are more reliable than that now, other than sway-a-way. Which is a huge bummer.
Bilstein doesn't have anything over 3". Most all their product line is around the 2-2.5" lifts. They do have a front for 3..2" but they want over $1,200 PER corner!

My Dobinson MRAs are going strong after almost 2 years of daily driving and a bunch of off roading trips. I expect to get at least 30k before a rebuild and am hoping for 50k+. We don't really have high speed off road stuff on the east coast but they get their fair share of quick gravel roads and passing right over speed bumps because I think it's funny.

FWIW it seems like Icon really leads the way in abysmal service intervals. I think the other high end stuff all has pretty good mixed use service life these days. It's like Icons need a rebuild before 10k no matter what and everything else only needs that if you are always playing trophy truck.
Just looked at the Dobinsons and they too, don't have anything over 2". :(

Just use your own Springs. You may have to get narrower ones as the 5100 uses the stock width spring. Assuming you aren't running some long travel setup, the dampers should be of sufficient length. Just run the front at 0" with the appropriate lift spring.

Although I don’t know a lot about this company, I like the idea of working with them to design the right shock for your rig. Triple Locked Adventure’s (you can tell he is a bit excited in the video) gets into Ride Shocks in a little more depth here:

If you look into them, I’m curious to hear your experience. This is a route I’m considering down the road.

These look awesome, but I may need a small lottery win for these. They're coming in at about double of anything else.

3.5" lift not sure what is available, but for me shocks that are needed to be rebuilt at regular intervals would not be an option on a DD. Westcott Designs uses a few different options for Bilstein and Fox Accutune 2.5's that I am aware of. Fox is usually a bit softer, at least in the past. And not saying Westcott Designs is the place to go I would use a shop that specializes in multiple shocks and experience with the GX. King and Elka are other options similar to the Icons but only familiar with Elka for the Polaris Rangers. And not something I need, my Trail Boss has self leveling shocks much like my 460, and happy with how they work. On both the GX and Northstar. If either starts to get saggy pants I will stay with OEM. Most likely...

On Upland Journal last year there was a discussion on shocks for off road use. Bird Hunters at least hard core ones prefer to go places not many others go or even better can't go. So push the whole concept of off road to another level. In the discussion which I just dug up a guy from New England that ran a 470 hunting rig posted this which pretty much nailed it on several points IMO:

I kept the stock airbags on my GX until they died last year at 190K or so. I originally had already swapped to expensive ICON adjustable external reservoir shocks but when those kicked the bucket (they don't last as long as their price would suggest) I just went with stock 4runner shocks and Dobinson springs and never looked back. Good tires, decent suspension components in good shape and using the best off road piece of equipment which resides between your ears will go a long way........

I bought the ICONs slightly used for decent money but once they died I was all set with throwing them out when they were kicked.......to your point I remember asking what people do for like 2-3 weeks while they are getting rebuilt every year......(15-20K is every year for me)......the common answer was "keep a stock set of shocks around to put on".......of course for those who lifted things they needed to buy a cheaper set of long travel shocks just for this purpose......friggin' nutts.

What sort of maintenance cost to those Bilsteins have?

Hell yes. I had 5100s and OME springs on my Tacoma for 4-5 years. Zero problems. Great shocks. Huge upgrade from factory Bilsteins. Any one of these sealed units will last a long time, similar to OEM.

My 13 Taco Baja T|X came with TRD modified 6112's including progressive valving. Lasted for 10 years and 90K the Toyota dealer wanted $4,500 to replace them. No really, get the hell out of here! They were good but not that good. I replaced them with 5100's and OME for ~$1K installed and the ride was very close to the original TRD setup. Certainly not a $3.5K difference. The 5100's are a common gold standard for many and I will not argue against that.

Lexus now offers the 5100 setup as an option direct from them part number PTN5960100 and says up to 2.75" of lift. Personally I don't want a lift and all the other issues it incurs at some point eventually. Not sure what the lowest amount of lift is on them but do know it should provide a bit more travel if you set them lower plus a better ride. You can put together the same thing independent of Lexus on your own of course and most likely a bit cheaper. But it says something to me when the 5100 is the shock that Lexus offers for a lift.

Off Road Warehouse has always been about a one or maybe two day turn-around, so the inconvenience is minimal other than the commute to them. The nearest one is about 35 miles. (I know I'm going to get some ribbing on that last comment from you folks that live in the middle of nowhere...)

My bad...
I just went to the first page of my build thread and scrolled down to where I list all the components I've added to see exactly what I currently have:
  • ICON 2003-Current GX470/GX460 Overland Series 3" Lift Rear Coil Springs ICON-52800
  • ICON 2003-UP Lexus GX470/GX460 V.S. 2.5 Series RR Rear Shocks (0-3" Lift) ICON-57810P 2
  • ICON 2010-Current Lexus GX460 Extended Travel Front Coilover Shock Kit ICON-58647-700 2
So my lift is actually only 3", not 3.5". Apologies for the confusion. Still most all the manufacturers only seem to go up to 2.5".

You can compare the extended and compressed length of shocks with what you know works, as well.

Foam Cell Pro kit will get you 3" front and 3" in the back, and they have options to accommodate heavier/lifted rigs with more weight. I'm running the "Medium Load" (0-110#) setup on my GX, which weighs about 5300# dry, and they ride a bit stiff empty and ride great when the rig is loaded with gear/people up to about the 6000# mark. If you want the "heavy load" kit, it looks like they only go up to 2.5", which I'm betting is due to the springs and not the shocks. You could probably get the heavy load kit to 3" front and rear with small spacers on the front struts and rear springs.

You might be able to snag a kit for 20% off next week on Black Friday. The Stage 1 kit is basically the same cost as buying the front coilovers and rear shocks separately, but comes with rear springs and the KDSS bar. You could probably sell those parts (or your old parts) and makeup some of the cost. Plus, your old Icon coilovers and shocks will still have some residual value - even if they need a rebuild - so it could be a relatively low-cost upgrade.

Great point about selling the Icons. The fronts are fine and I believe only one of the rear's need the rebuild.
Also, I keep forgetting about Black Friday. My wife and I are usually not into "impulse" shopping just because something is marked down, but this may be worth looking into.
Thanks!

Just looked at the Dobinsons and they too, don't have anything over 2". :(

Exit Offroad, and likely some other US Dobinsons dealers have the extended travel front/long travel rear options for over 3 inches of lift that should also keep droop travel.

Had them on a lifted 4G 4Runner and currently on the GX at factory height and 32" tires. Pretty sure I'll get at least 50k out of them. 4Runner still felt good at twice that.

Droop you say? I loved the basic dobinsons setup I had on my 470.

That's pretty sick droop! That's King of the Hammers level of travel! What was your lift set at? 3 inches? Also, what else did you do for that amount of articulation?
I don't think you can get that with just shocks and springs. Did you remove your sway bar?

Some crazy deep water fording in a Prado!
Made it look easy. And on street tires no doubt. I imagine they still had the factory sealed air box since it didn't hydro lock the engine.

I need half of that water height so I can wash my undercarriage.

Same - an 18 inch deep stream of clean water with a gravel bottom would be really handy to find after off road trips
