Wife and I just got back looking at the new GX550's at our local Lexus dealership.
Holy-Cow! They want $8k over manufacturers plus add-ons for a price deep into the $90k stratosphere!:flipoff2:
They said for a local (myself) they may go down to $7k over, but for L.A., minimum $10K over and for out of state, $12k over.
Sucks... But it's a commodity now and people are willing to pony up that extra. I won't do it. I'll wait a couple years till they become old news.
Plus there's not really a lot of off road/overland after market accessories for them yet.

That's craziness, especially with GX depreciation.

It will be interesting to see if the GX depreciation continues with the 550 especially with the overtrail and OT+. My hope is that it will and I can pick up a lightly used lease turn in a few years from now. Depending on real world reports over the next couple of years.

In Mn. there are 2 Lexus dealers and friend of mine just bought a Lexus car for his wife after riding in my GX. She was driving a first gen Tundra prior to that. He said they had 7 GX's in prep they were working on that had just come in. They have ~1 year waiting list and IIRC they are waiting on close to a thousand of them to come in to fill the wait list. Neither dealer sells any additional dealer markup (ADM) they are at MSRP. He didn't drive one but got good looks at several and said they are stunning in real life. He currently drives a FJ.

Wow! Definitely would take a used GX460 over the new ones. Proven reliability and V8. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Forgot to mention we stopped at the Toyota dealership first look at the new LC's, since it was on the way to Lexus. It's a small dealership and didn't have any on the lot, but said they had three on the way in. It would have been nice to do a little comparison between the two. I'm curious about the interior appointments and comfort between the two. Maybe next year I'll hit both dealerships again when the all the hoopla about these two new models settles down and they start sitting on the lot.

I sat in one when I was having my GX serviced the other week. Hopefully someone can help me out but if you're wanting a new Toyota why would you pick it over a new 4Runner? What benefits are there? This particular LC was $57k and bare bones. No leather.. no sunroof.. literally nothing extra.

Was there a dealer mark-up?

Because everyone wants the “LC” badge. Wife talked about trading her 4runner in for one and I said no. Unless it’s for a 200 or an LX570 there’s no way I’m paying that much and not get more room.

I was on the waiting list for the new LC since August of last year and was #2 on the list. I knew about it because I pulled the owner of the largest Toyota dealer in Northern Mn. out of the woods on the Canadian border year before last. He was in his Ranger on a ski trail where he shouldn't be and I went in and pulled him out with my Ranger.

He had just got back from a Toyota dealership National conference in Vegas and they had told the dealers that it was coming out. He asked me to not say anything as they had to agree to a non disclosure about it but he told me to watch for the announcement and as soon as I seen it call and get on the list so that is what I did. The dealer in town did not charge an additional dealer markup but quite a few in other States do.

In fact that is how I ended up getting the GX. In November I started to get second thoughts of buying a first gen new release especially power train anything even from Toyota. They had an almost new 4Runner TRD Pro listed on the website so went to look at it. Was not impressed it wasn't much better than my 13 Taco Baja after driving it.

Was going to walk and the salesman said hey I have a 19 GX460 Luxury in almost new condition that spent winters in Texas with only 40K on it why don't take it for a spin? Told him no way I just wasn't a Lexus type of guy what the hell look at all of mothers natures pinstriping on my Taco. He damn near had to twist my arm to drive it. Took me all of 2 minutes behind the wheel and knew that it was coming home with me but didn't let him know. Until after the paper work was signed.

Got the call a couple of months ago that my LC was in and it came to $72K all in IIRC, fully loaded. Told him no way if I was going to upgrade now it would be to a GX 550.

Because some of us started with a Land Cruiser, many think FJ40 for early Land Cruisers but some of us had an Iron Pig FJ55 which is equivalent to the new ones

A lot of the rest of the World had the same I snagged this full page add in Abu Dhabi during the Gulf War in 91

$57K would be the base bare bones 1958 version. Easy enough for me to remember as that is the year I was born. It is also the year the FJ25 came to the US in San Diego, the first one in the US.

Did you mean $5.7k for the base 1958?

orangerock said that the one he sat in was $57k so that would be about right for the bare bones 1958. Although they are being listed at ~$60K+ in places even slightly used. More than my first home cost, the world has gone insane  Wait a minute I sound like my father did. Although that normally isn't a bad thing.

The First Edition starts at $75k which is poking into GX 550 territory. Most of those likely will end up being purchased by dealers is my guess although there is a demand for them.

Ha-ha! Not poking anywhere near the GX price territory if you live down by me, in the land of ridiculous dealer mark-ups!!

Both the 250 and 550 are in crazy-money territory, considering how much of a lightly used GX460 one can purchase for $30-40K. Literally half the cost and known reliability. I do really like the 550 on paper, but would have a very hard time dropping $90K on a new rig. Theoretically I could afford one (though it might trigger Ms. Rednexus to leave me....), it just seems like a giant waste of money.

Additionally, neither a stock 250 or 550 is going to be able to do the kind of wheeling I like doing without skids, bumpers, sliders, a lift, better tires, and maybe wheels. Then a sleeping platform on top of that. So basically $10K+ in mods and voiding a warranty on top of the $60-90K purchase price.

I said so much about the LC in a thread I shouldn't have based on the bride's opinion of it. We pulled up at the dealer and she hopped right in. Two minutes later, after opening every compartment/door but the hood (I know), she climbed back in and said 'no'.
I hopped out for a second as a salesman approached and he asked me what a Prado was. I pointed at the LC250 and I said 'that'. He looked confused and showed me the rear hatch and compartments, stating that 'you can fit an AR-15' in there. It looked poorly designed/manufactured(the compartment) and I was unimpressed. I get that it is a new model but some buyers aren't going to swallow the B.S.
If the LC250 and GX550 shared the same powertrain and only differed on the quality of appointments, I might entertain the idea. Seeing that is not the case and we are observing Aztec/Element/4Runner(03-06) accents, I'll refuse.

Exactly! The type of off roading we do, if I were to get one, there wouldn't be any after market armor, or much of anything for it. Albeit, I think it's still more capable stock than a stock GX460. But all I have to do is look at the beast I've built and I'm happy. {Still need new seat covers....)

I wrote almost exactly what you did in your first paragraph in the 550 thread a few months ago. Don't be that guy there, I have a new orifice in my body after that  But it is true and exactly how I feel as well and what I did with my 19 460 last Nov. Found the dealer sticker in the glove box and got it for half the price with 40K on it.

It could use some more ground clearance but pretty sure it is the same as the 250 and every vehicle I've ever owned could use more ground clearance no matter what you do, I think it is a law somewhere. I'm past the age of sleeping in the back of any truck or vehicle last time I did that I was 60. It hurt and after that discovered there are a lot of cabins and lodges out there for rent but have to know where to look. And in very remote places it hasn't slowed me down a bit.

The GX impressed me in Canada I put it through the paces, wasn't the goal but it happens. Didn't beat on it no hold my beer and watch this but didn't baby it either. The few times I couldn't make it through a trail was because didn't feel like getting out the chain saw and playing lumberjack to open it up. Because odds are there is another just a short distance down the trail. Most trails hadn't seen a vehicle in quite a while some a couple of years. Got the Ranger Trail Boss for really sticky situations but they both have their place. And some places one is allowed but not the other, and other places it is reversed.

Where both were allowed or distances were long from the cabin to start in off a primary road always took the GX. Still puts a smile on my face just thinking about the creature comforts it has yet the capability when 30 miles from the nearest house. At times it seemed almost surreal. Just got back Saturday and leave Sunday for a couple of weeks on the North Shore and get to do it again. Life is good and I have it better than I ever thought I would.

Question: Has anyone added a idle/throttle advance to increase RPM's when out of the vehicle?
I would like to have one when I'm using the 3,000 Watt inverter and my e-chainsaw, or even the air compressor. When the chainsaw is really needing to pull juice, it helps the inverter if the engine is idling at higher rev's. I can't always have my wife in the there holding her foot down on the accelerator.
Even when doing that, it's really hard to keep one's foot in a precise position between 2,000 - 2,500 RPM's for any length of time.
A lot of older (dare I say, "vintage") trucks used to have a lever in the cab to set the idle, especially the trucks with PTO's.

Do you remember 'The Club' steering wheel lock/anti-theft device? I received one as a gift in 2002. It comes in handy when needing to pull/push things into a static position for a length of time. I can effectively set the RPM by bracing it between the pedal and seat or mount. Same with bleeding brakes solo. Lots of adjustment available. A 2x4" at the right length can do the same.

You could also put a small valve in the intake tube ahead of the throttle body but behind the MAF that is open to the air. This would introduce a small vacuum leak which would cause the idle speed to rise. The power steering pump on most older Toyotas use the same approach to boost idle speed when turning the wheels.
