You have had 1) 12 HT installed in the truck, and 2) 1HD-T sitting on a shelf for that truck for quite a while.

It seems like you may have a bias toward the gasser.

Let me pose a question: If the 74 was your only driver (no shop truck, 100, 60, etc.) what would you run in the 74?

Whatever your answer is what I suggest you install.

Preferably an LS3... :)

You deserve to have a Torvette.

Hi all,

Go with the 1FZ-E and H151 Tor! This engine, with a manual trans, and without the weight of the 80 Series, will really be nice.

Regards,

Alan

The twin turbo V8 Diesel is an amazing engine, and it would transplant fairly well into almost anything. I have one on the shop floor right now, and it's a work of art! The only problem is that there's "ZERO" parts support in the US. I would avoid using it for that reason, at least with a 1HD you have some parts availability from the Toyota dealers and MUD vendors.

Also that engine is too new to be operated on public roads in the US. One could fly under the radar but if it was "discovered" you could lose it.

I'll help you get started.....sooner, at least.

I'll throw in the FZJ75 MT ECU/harness and even ship it for free.

How 'bout them apples?

Hmmm, I thought hard about what to vote. At first I was like, "Diesel, duh." But know I can see why you started this thread.
Here are my thoughts,
Assuming you don't care that much about fuel economy, and assuming this will not be a dd, I will vote 1fz.
If you do care about economy and this will get driven lots I would go diesel. But both would be better than what it has in it now.

Tor, I can come up and help out later this month; on the Big Island until this weekend. :(

Alan, you should come over and get me started! I'm still on :princess: restriction, so no more 16 hour days :censor::censor::censor:

Ooooooh, that's tempting!

Lemme raise the skirt and show a little thigh, then....

Will throw in all new, all FZJ7X specific engine frame brackets, engine mounts, crossmember mounts, crossmember, and front and rear isolators, too.

Plus, you can have your choice of H151F or H150F, both FZJ7X specific, both with mechanical HF1A TCs that the shifter comes up where it should.

That's no ordinary 1FZ rebuild, either, but the product of the legendary powderpig.

Edited: stated without discounting TorFab, by the way.

Realize it's not a real consideration.

I headed down the FZJ73 route, too, but the roads diverged and, after backtracking (with a chit tonne less dinero in the pack) I chose the path more travelled.

I'd bet the FZ would put a smile of the most cynical, bigoted petrol hater, even the face of the V8ters.

The U.S. variants are difficult to work with, the H15Xs aren't easy/cheap to come by, but remain a firm believer that the FZ has its place in Cruiser history, at the pinnacle of +40 years of I6 torquers.

I'd jump on that gasser... But can do without the vision of a certain raised skirt :(

If the 74 is just for wheeling, go gas.

Gas will stay warm in the winter, keep the cab nice and warm. If you are just wheeling with it, fuel efficiency isn't a big deal anyways and your drive train will probably be happier with less torque when you get stuck.

Plus, you can sell the diesel to a customer instead then!

Plus plus, you know my vote is for the isuzu 4bd1t :)

We just finished out first 4bd1t conversion

I was surprised how quiet it was at idle without any exhaust connected. I'm still not making a decision until I get time to work on it, but your logic makes sense. If I could develop a 1FZ to H55 adapter, then that would be my choice.

Just a disclaimer, it appears that the later model Isuzu 4bd's run smoother then earlier models.

as for 1FZ to H55, it rumor has it there is a OEM bellhousing:

1FZ to a H55

The 1HZ engine used in Prado's was mated to the H55f transmission, the Bellhousing for this (Part#31111-60230) will also fit a 1FZ-FE engine. (I don't know if that is fact, thats what was stated)

Clutch Housing 1HZ & 1HD-T to H55F [31111-60230] - $467.17 : CruiserParts.net, Toyota Landcruiser Parts

$467 for the bellhousing

I have that bellhousing, and it's not a match to the 1FZ. The patterns are actually different. This engine has different internals and IP, so it's a bit quieter than a stock engine. I don't know if I would do this conversion again, because of the size, etc. This one is unique though, and it's on an 80 frame which is cool ;-)
