I sold the drivetrain out of my BJ74 to a customer, and now I'm at a crossroad. I can install a 1HD-T which is sitting on my shop floor not spoken for, or I can install a 1FZ which is also on the shop floor but I would have to buy the bellhousing to bolt on a H151 transmission.

The 1HD is definitely the easier conversion, because I can use the H55 transmission. But around here, people get pissed on the trail when you're running a diesel because the air stagnates in the trees. The 1FZ is such a smooth engine, makes more power for more fun, and I can supercharge or turbo it down the line for even more smiles.

Obviously the fuel mileage difference will be HUGE, one will get 12mpg and the other will get 20mpg +.

So what do you guys think? Give me your "opinion" for what it's worth and maybe I might follow it

I'm going to leave the LS engine out of this, and please don't give your opinion on any other engine choice, because obviously there are hundreds out there. I just want to compare these two options at this point.:beer::beer:

Real trucks don't have spark plugs. The diesel smell that people object to can be tamed by adding biodiesel to the mix as it makes the engine run significantly cleaner.

You could also run a bit of WVO to make it smell like yummy asian food, or french fries. I'm not at all schooled in the positives or negatives of these engines. My vote would be to go gasoline, but only because I want you to drop the 1HD-T into my BJ74. PM inbound in that regard...

Hello Mr. Torfab,
My opinion is not a fair one, as i am a happy diesel addict. To hell with the trail whiners! If one is on a trail, there's more than enough fresh air to dissipate the exhaust fumes, unlike in a thick urban environment.
I have a 1HZ (with an H55F), and i must assume the 1HD is an improvement (yes i could be wrong); those are lovely engines, and diesel torque is hard to beat. Stick to the old and reliable, i say.
All the same, if you want a gasser, it is almost impossible to do better than a GM 350: parts available all over the place in North America, reliability beyond issue, and they can be set up for more power and torque than you'll ever need, or for low fuel consumption. Plus, they are likely lighter than Toyota's engines.
Educate yourself, i say; then, and only then, decide.

How do you plan to drive the BJ?
Do you need highways speeds and acceleration? Daily driver or weekend toy?

my vote is diesel.
If you are doing anything remote the idle time burns far less fuel than a gas vehicle.
resale would be better because its rare
Plus diesel is just, cooler....

Diesel.... Chug away all day and still have fuel to get home. Can take a water dunking without any ignition issues. Can be on all sorts on angles and not worry about fuel starvation...

Diesel. Figure out everything's that needed for the install and take notes so that you're ready to put a 1HZ into my BJ70.

Diesel, no contest. For the mpg, torque, cool factor, and immediate resale value.

Diesel also makes a lot more sense looking 15-20 years into the future (assuming you plan to keep your truck that long, and even if not, for the interesting thoughts about the future of cars). Gasoline engines will be obsolete within my lifetime. Diesel, I doubt it. Not just because of its foothold in the industrial world, but also because of the flexibility of the engine to run VO, biodiesel, and whatever else they invent over the coming decades. In 50 years, I can't imagine any gasoline engines being worth more than the recycle value of the metal, but I bet good mechanical no-nonsense run-forever diesel engines will be in short supply and high demand.

Everyone is so quick to vote diesel because they're cool, but don't discount the 1FZ so quickly. They're beast engines, yea the fuel mileage sucks and I'm the first one to pull it out of an 80 in favor of an LS or 1HD-FTE, but don't ever say they suck ;-)

This 70 series has 350 at the wheels with a relatively low boost turbo on it

I vote is for 1FZ for rock crawling, sand and drag racing. 1HD-T for overland and towing.

Hello,

Regardless of your engine choice, consider using the H151 transmission with either the 1FZ or the 1HD.

My two cents.

I love the 1FZ in my 80! Super strong and never misses a beat. Having said that, we're in the market for a replacement 80 and looking at the 81s with the 1HDT. The 2H in our troopy lacks the power my wife craves, but she loves the 80. I recommend you use the gas engine and sell the 1HDT to me. Win win...
