I have the Toyota 90915-YZZD3 oil filter

Is that the big or small filter?

If its the small, should I order the bigger one from Cdan and wait?

Thanks

that is the small filter,

The filter is fine. Use it.

If you're wondering if that is the small good filter (90915-20004) or the big good filter - neither. I'm sure it's a fine filter, but if you're looking for participation in the over the top anally retentive crowd here, this one doesn't rate. If you can't buy good Toyota filters, try the NAPA Gold filter which I believe is made by Wix.

at how many stashed 2004s does one begin to be anally retentive? More than 20 I hope...! :D

Alas, since you cornered the market I only have a dozen - split between the good big/small ones. Now that my Cruiser stable doubled, my months of supply has been halved. I may have to hire a certain Navy SEAL on this list to do an extraction at your house, E....

ah! who said I keep them in a disclosed location...? This stuff is valuable, my friend... soon we'll be able to trade one for an ARB bull bar!

SEALs don't need a disclosed location. They specialize in finding things where they are, not looking where they aren't. That's for Rangers to do....

Uh oh, I better board up the house and barricade myself in the garage with my filter stash, I still have around 25 of them. or enough to get me to arround 250K miles.

10K per? wow!
I change them at 3K. Of course, that's only once a year... 20 years worth..... :)

sorry was not clear, I run ~5k per OCI,sometimes more sometimes less, I already have 130K, will take me 5 years at the current rate to get to 250K.

Eric's bruisers is the king of stash for that one......:D

He has 60+......................:D

Are you guys talking about the small and large Toyota filters? My local parts counter was not much help in differentiating between the two. What is a "good" filter?

I just changed to Mobil1. I swished it around for a couple of days with the small filter (D3?) and then drained the M1/petrol residue mix, and put in fresh M1 with the (undoubtedly) large filter. How's that for anal?

I noticed the large Jap filter bottomed out while threading it on a bit before I would have normally stopped. That normal?

I have had limited success trying to achieve the 3/4 turn recommended. Must be others think it touches before I do (me being insensitive again?), and when I did do it the one time, I had a heck of a time taking it off later.

Eric,

The truly anally retentive 80 owner's oil filter technique is as follows:

Start filter on threads. Gently spin it by giving it a quick spin so it spins on by itself and gets stopped gently by contact with the oil seal. Back off a turn and give it a gentle spin so it stops itself again. Turn one half turn. Done. It's just an easy way to know the filter's seal has contacted the block if you're not that sensitive. It's also an extremely consistent install.

In 150,000 miles on this 80 I've never had so much as a drop weep out. Rain, shine, heavy summer towing, -10 winter startups, etc. That's about 20 filters.

PS -

Pay no attention to the black helicopter that recently passed over, or to the telephone company van fixing your neighbor's phone line. Just sit at your computer with your hands in plain sight and it will all be over soon.

thanks, may try that.

Btw, anybody, is there a cheap socket available somewhere that fits the end of the 20004 and can be reached with a wrench?

One thing that I might add to Dougs proceedure is preheating the filter. I set my oven to 120 deg and place the filter in the oven out of it's box and the plastic film removed just as I'm going out to start the change. This way the gasket is slightly softened and the can has expanded to a mid point of it's normal operating temperature. That way the gasket will flex evenly from it's seated position as it either cools or heats.
