I was having the following symptoms with my 2003 Lx470 original nav screen. My nav unit stopped reading the original maps disk (located under the passenger seat). This leads to a very annoying popup displaying on the screen "disk error, check Nav disk" There are a couple different wordings but they all mean the same thing. The unit cannot read or does not have a nav disk loaded under the passenger seat.

I searched all over for a solution and found the following options.
1. Clean the disk and the disk reader (I tried both of these things multiple times and ways to no avail)
2. Buy a new/used maps dvd disc from Ebay (make sure the versions are correct, do some research)
4. Replace the nav unit under the seat (Very expensive IF you can find one...)
3. Do the Nav delete and install the tesla screen (expensive but the long term solution)

My solution:
Unplug the "2nd" plug (#3 on the picture) from the rear of the nav unit. This will remove the popup and all navigation function. Given that it's 2023 and I use my phone for all navigation I was fine with this. The following will no longer work with this unplugged. Everything else is functioning as normal including trip information, climate, radio, and no more annoying popup.
The MAP, DEST, and MENU button will no longer work
The voice commands connected to navigation will not work
Calendar and maintenance calendar is no longer available under the INFO button

Here's what I did that is currently working for me. Remove the panel under the rear of the passenger seat to access the nav unit (this is where you can eject and insert the nav disk). With that removed you will have limited access to the rear of the nav unit. You will have to reach over and feel for the plugs, you can also take the unit out via the 4 10mm bolts and its much easier to see and do. Looking at the front of the unit (where the disk inserts) on the back left of the unit are 5 total sockets for plugs coming from under the seat. The photo below is taken from the back of the unit after it was removed completely. Socket #2 is not used! Socket #3 is what needs to be unplugged.

Below is a picture of the plugs taken from the rear of the seat. They have been number labeled to match the above picture for which socket they go into. The plug labeled #3 is what needs to be unplugged.

Feel free to give it a try if you are having this issue. Keep in mind this is a temporary solution to remove the popup until I get the full nav delete and tesla style screen installed.

Thanks for writing this up! I just ordered a DVD update from eBay but if that doesn't work, I'll likely follow these instructions to disconnect. Also, disabling the "Automatically return to Navigation from Audio/Climate" was a very helpful setting in the menu. It drove me nuts that it reset to Nav (and the error msg) multiple times per start.

Dumb follow up question:
1) I've got a 2006, what gen is that? 2/3 or 4?
2) Does the GROM Vline bypass most of these needs as long as I unplug the 3rd cable?

3. Do the Nav delete and install the tesla screen (expensive but the long term solution)

Or get the T'eyes CC3, it's pretty well plug and play nowadays for the 03-07 LX470s. For example the "hum" issue in LCs not the LXs.

And here's a snapshot from the 36 page thread on this unit:

This is a 2003 so 2nd gen? Not sure what all they added for the 2006.

And not sure on the GROM unit. Once you get the nav unit unbolted from under the seat it's fairly easy to mess with and do some testing with the plugs.

Yes good info. I've been following that thread for a while but still haven't committed to it.
Still seems kinda hit or miss unfortunately.

My 07 has the failed Nav. After leaving the screen on trip info a few times when I shutdown, it now autostarts there and does not show the "insert disc" popup. It may do the same thing if you shut down in the audio screen enough times, I just haven't tried.

Does anyone know if the backup camera will keep working if you pull these plugs?

No idea unfortunately. It's pretty easy to access so worth a try and test
The problem with mine is that the camera isn't currently working, so I'd have to way to know if pulling the plug would change anything.

Pulling my hair out trying to get to the bottom of it.

I have a 2002 Toyota Landcruiser and was getting a similarly annoying "disc not readable error". So i ordered a used unit replacement off ebay and much to my dismay the exact same error kept coming up. So I assumed there was something else wrong with the system. I tried new discs and cleaning, etc. But then I just tried ordering a used Nav unit from a 2007 Lexus. Even though it was a next generation device it worked perfectly well plug and play! Clearly the first replacement I got from a 2001 LC had the same problem with it - and is now not eligible for a return - so buyer beware this is such a common problem for those units. For $130, it got rid of the annoying disc read error, even though I agree with many of the posts here that I will unlikely ever use the actual navigation. The part number for anyone else looking to do the same is:
