I have a stock 74 FJ40. Want disc brakes and in the future PS. Found a local guy with 1980 front and rear axles. Can I swap front and rear axles relatively easy, anything I need to look out for ?? Thanks in advance.

Should bolt right in. Gears are going to be 3.73 instead of your 4.11s you have now. Could be good or bad depending on your use and tire size.

Thanks for the replies.

I knew about the drums in the rear. Going to change gears in the future, so thats fine. So the only thing I need is the flanges for the driveshafts ??? Correct ?

brake line size

Brake line size could also be different. The older cruisers had a 9mm size and the newer had a 10mm size, but i can't tell you when that changed.

Is the brake fitting side changeable / fixable ? Same with the brakeline size, is that changeable / fixable ? I knew it wasnt going to be bolt them up and go, so Im just trying to figure it all out.
The ones Im looking at have discs front and rear:), Im guessing that causes more issues. Maybe I'll have to re-plumb the whole system ?

you can have a decent parts store put the correct fitting on the lines that you need to change. No need to re plumb the whole system. Been there dont that...

Hi All:

The 1980 FJ40 axles will be a good swap into your '74, but there are a few things to worry about.

Like has been mentioned, the axle ratios are 3.7 in the '80 diffs. The drive shaft flanges are different between a '74 and a '80 FJ40. The brake line fittings are the same size, but the location where the brake line drops down to the front axle is the left (driver's) side on the '74 and the right (passenger's) side on the '80.

What I'd suggest is buying these axles and stripping the front for donor parts to convert your existing '74 frontend to disc brakes. You can use your existing 4.11 front diff and left-side brake line with the '80 disc brakes, hubs, and Birfields. Save the rear axle for future use.

Regards,

Alan
