I'm wanting to install power steering on my 82 fj40, my question is why not use a refurbished gear box from an 82 fj40 instead of a Toyota 4 wheel drive pickup? Also would it bolt right up to the existing gear box bracket, it seems like it might be a better way to go. Thanks for any advice,

check with Mark, wyotovich here on mud, he listed one for sale recently.

there are some other options also. check the tech links.

problem is finding a used PS unit, as there wasn't many of them

If memory serves, even with the correct gearbox, you'll need to shorten your steering shaft....could be wrong, but you might want to check on it before you tear into things.....

yes, that's why I pushed him towards Mark's set up as it included the column.
it would either need to be shortened or could be spaced/shimmed out from the firewall.

Steering shaft needs shortened about 3/4 inch.

Yea....... but that lower shaft is easy enough to chop-off and drill a hole for the pin..........
