Mods can move this if im in the wrong spot, but I figured I would come to the welding corner to ask:

I have a few body panels that I need to get welded in (im not a body guy). This is for a 76 FJ40. I have a rear quarter panel that needs to be replaced due to rust.

For a project like this how much should I expect from a metal shop to cut out the old and tack weld (I assume) the new panel in? I could do all finishing work I just need the actual cutting, welding done.

Im in Mississippi and don't know if this would be a job quote or by the hour quote.

ANY pointers on types of welds to use or how much it should cost and dickering over an upfront price verse an hourly agreement would help.

I have guys in my club that weld, but not on this level and they are busy with some other projects

thanks

John

I would guess that removing and replacing the two quarter panels would be about 8 hours of shop time with no finish work involved. Assuming about $75 per hour, this would be $600, assuming that you could get a shop to do just this.

yuck....ill look at other options....thanks for the info.

anybody else wanna chime in?

post pics see what your working with. remove the panels yourself . plenty of post on here of people doing it to show you how. here's a good tool to remove panels
Spot Weld - Weldout Drill Sets | AutoBodyDrill.com

here's a couple videos also good luck

YouTube - Blair Spotweld Cutters
YouTube - spot weld removal/Panel replacement

awesome info....thanks.

I found out today that a another buddy can do the work for me. My goal is to get the metal work done and paint it so I can :steer: but this info will help me build knowledge for that first welder I want to buy/use....cheers
