Wondering if anyone has seen this before - I have a Autometer pyrometer in my 40 that for seemingly no reason suddenly jumped to around 1400 degrees and just stays there. When I turn the key on, it resets to zero and then jumps back to the same position, and doesn't seem to move from there at all, even when driving. Would that be a probe problem? I thought maybe the wire to the probe might have shorted on something, but its a steel braided covering, and I doubt it would wear through. I haven't gone through it carefully yet, just kinda looked at it and saw that it wasn't touching anything and thought I would check here first before I started ripping out wires. Any clues? Thanks!

maybe...

bad ground
24v is crossing over to the 12v, bad converter/connection

i have an autometer pyro never had a problem, but some here h8 them... :frown:

I am guessing that it is a 12v guage right ? So I am agreeing with Gold Boy . I only run 24v guages ( much harder to find) so I dont rely on my 24v-12v converter. Make sure you are grounding.

Yeah, I guess I'll have to go through it carefully. The thing is the boost guage is connected to the exact same circuit, and its working fine. It was all working good and then one day it freaked out on me, so it sounds like a short. I'll pull out the wiring tonight and see what gives. Thanks for the thoughts, guys.

Try disconnecting the probe from the gauge and see if you get the same symptom.

okay, suck badly...

X2 ..

ISSSPRO or VDO .. I've seen in a buddy pyro how the Autometer never read well, at the end they send another probe and he need to pay for the gauge ..

OMG, again, i've had some issue installing my pyro meter, but it is NOT because autometer sucks. But because Toyota bolts comes loose.........

Check your Ground. leave the pyro installation like it should be. Take a wire and touch one end anywhere on the motor close to your pyro, the other end to your frame. And let me know if that works!

And see this thread..

Good luck!

Ok, so I tried that (finally) and it didn't make a difference, so I proceeded to remove the probe from the exhaust mainifold. I pulled the probe up and checked the wire, and noticed in one section the yellow insulation oozing through the steel braiding! Yeah, stupid me. Routed it too close to hot stuff. I nipped off about six inches of the steel braiding, and separated the two wires inside and taped everything back up. As soon as I did that the pyrometer jumped down to zero, so I put everything back together, rotated the probe so that the wire coming out was pointing towards my fender and re-routed the wire far away from any heat source. So its all good. Thanks for your suggestions guys.
