Hey guys this just happened yesterday, I pushed my clutch in while sitting at red lights or stop signs and motor revs up high, what is going on here? It is a bone stock 77 FJ40. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

Got gear lube in the transmission? Sounds like a lot of friction.

Maybe you have the clutch and gas pedals mixed up?

Is it a right hand drive?

I'm not totally sure your wrong...

Sounds like something between the two linkages is interacting. This is a new one on me...

Maybe the whold peddle bucket bracket is loose so when you push in the clutch its pulling the throttle cable too. That sounds semi logical....

The whole thing doesn't make sense, unless he's got some aftermarket throttle set up where the cable is contacting the clutch fork.

sensor

or maybe like a throttle position sensor or something similar

what year and type is your motor ? Sorry I just saw bone stock 77

I'd have a look at the 2F schematic for your year and see what kind of sensors it has

Hey guys been away from the computer, it has the stock 2F in it, I am also going to look at things again tomorrow. Thanks for all the help.

look at your carb, gumming up. same thing was happing with mine. get it back from the shop tomorrow. had the carb rebuilt for $120, needed it any how. the kit can be bought for cheap on ebay. i'm a full time student and work full time so had a excellent shop take care of it with a great old man to do the work, also a man from the Philippines to over see the rest of my 40 for any thing else he may see that may need attention. of course it could be just that your choke or linkage is sticking, good luck

Do you have RPM numbers so we can compare normal with 'high'.

I'm wondering if your pilot bearing is starting to seize up.

OTOH, since it's happening when you're also holding your foot on the brake pedal, and you do have vacuum being applied to the booster at that point, a small vacuum leak may change the idle mixture and bump up your idle. I've seen that happen more than a few times.

76-78s have a throttle positioner to maintain engine RPMs at speeds greater than 15 MPH. It is controlled by a speed sensor driven by the speedometer cable under the dash. Maybe the clutch linkage is shorting out the sensor wire?

Intriguing theory Charlie. Now I'm gonna have to check back on this thread to see how it turns out!

I have a V8 in mine and it would do the same, I found the the carb gasket was shot. Put new gasket and it was fine. Good luck.

Alright guys I took it to the old salt at Toyota who has worked on all 5 of my previous 40's and has been there 28 years and he took a screwdriver and did something to the throttle and some screw, sorry I ain't a mechanic so I don't know what he did, but he was still curious about it, it is the stock carb, 31 years old. He just laughed and sent me on my way because I think as much as he hates to see me coming, he appreciates FJ40's when he rarely sees one.

What did he do? Did it work? Aren't you curious in case it happens again?

In fact it was a screwdriver and his pocket knife, a walking FJ40 wizard, I have no idea what he did because he did it so quick, but he said something about the throttle, everything is fine now.
Michael

He probably backed off the throttle positioner speed screw so it doesn't function any more. If it starts popping in the exhaust manifold during deceleration, you might want to fix it instead of applying a band aid.
