In my quest to make my 500+ mile weekly commute (well, carpool anyway) more economical, I ran across the above website. They list gas stations around the country that are no-ethanol. This means an extra 5% to 8% fuel economy - maybe not enough to drive across town, but enough to stop in if going near...

When new my Corolla used to climb La Bajada hill in 5th gear cruise control without kicking out, which it does at 10 mph below the set point. For years it has not done that. First two tries with pure gas it made it again. So, I thought I'd let everyone know... Check out the website. They have many stations listed, with 3 in the Albuquerque area, 3 dozen in New Mexico, and over 6,000 across the country.

RailRunner not an option, Steve?

I can't get there from here on the RailRunner... Besides, even to Santa Fe it costs me more (until gas gets up to $3.50 a gallon or so) and takes an hour longer round trip.

Hi Steve -

Interesting. I had heard that ethanol costs us gas mileage, but didn't realize we had a no-ethanol option. But when I looked on the website, I only saw two choices for Abq. G&T on North 4th street offers 86 and 88 octane. I'd give it a try if/when I'm ever in that part of town.

But the other choice (I think it was Big Bear Petroleum) was only for 91 octane (premium) and when you click on "more detail", it said that they are not equipped to pump directly into your car and you have to take a fuel can. Someone else posted up about "debris in the fuel". Sounds like more trouble than it's worth.

Anyway, I like the concept and thanks for sharing the info. I'll be checking back on the website to see if any others have added in my part of the world. Thanks!

Similar reasons I don't ride the bus to work. I spend ~ $100/month on fuel and don't even factor in oil and wear&tear costs on my car. I can ride the bus for $20/month. But if I ride the bus, I lose an hour of my day that I get to keep if I drive my car. And I have flexibility to come and go as I please instead of be a slave to the bus schedule.

On the topic of fuel, I thought in Bernalillo County that all gas had to be sold as an Ethanol mix during the winter months for "emissions" reasons.

The only petrol station in Santa Fe is Honstien oil by the airport. My dodge ram gets 8 miles per gallon around town, so I don't think I'll be driving there to fill up.

The state's Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources website produced a brochure for me when I did a search on Bernalillo County and Ethanol:

http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/ECMD/Multimedia/documents/RenewableFuelsFAQsE10.pdf

"Bernalillo County requires ten percent ethanol to be blended into all gasoline through the winter months - November through February"

"Bernalillo County requires ten percent ethanol to be blended into all gasoline through the winter months - November through February"

But it seems that most stations run the ethanol blend year round? Maybe it's easier for the stations not to have to switch back and forth, but it sounds like it could be a big difference in gas mileage - IF you could find it (non-ethanol) somewhere conveniently.

I think Evan is correct. It seems there is always ethanol in the gas. I know in CA it used to be ethanol/gas during the summer to cut back on smog. I think they do it now all the time, and it's probably easier to just keep it that way from a manufacturing perspective.

I think I will look into the 91 octane in a gas can. I have a few of those.

Do fuel companies add the ethanol at their factory prior to shipment to states or stations that require it or is there some central ethanol mixing facility where all gas goes through prior to shipment to the stations?

They have an iphone app for locating gas stations...

I know when I was in UT last year for CM i got 21mpg on UT gas (no ethanol) and after filling up in Farmington i got 17.5 mpg:rolleyes: Wonder if ethanol gasoline burns clean enough to account for the 17% loss in efficiency?

Gas buddy is a great app for phones for gas station prices.

I'll need to grab a gallon of the 91 for the chain saw. 2 Strokers love that pure gas!

I wonder if it's dyed for off-road use only.

i have purchased ethanol free petrol from a small engine shop in ABQ, it was pricey but they swore by no eth etc for storage and picky little engines... they also had a max they could sell at time or something and only into containers of course. you'd think it was the blood of unicorns for the price, but at 1 gal/year in case for the snowblower, i can survive. i want to say it was 2.5x premium price for premium equiv octane...

he called it "aviation gas" i would infer from that that they don't have ethanol restrictions... and no it wasn't jet fuel :P

pappy, isn't that only farm diesel they dye?

Avgas is 100LL, or 100 octane low lead. Be careful using it in anything with a cat or O2 sensor as the lead will foul it. It will, however, leave your tailpipe with a lovely grey coating inside. It is fantastic petrol.

I got gas at Holstein in SF yesterday. E0 is only premium, and cost $3.70 per gallon - about 20% above typical E10 regular. Not quite worth it...

Let us know by what percentage your mileage increases. If it's 20 percent or close to it may be worth it.

I am paying around $3.90 for diesel right now. The leap for me would not be so dramatic.

I go to G&T often. My 80 runs better on straight 88 than blended 91. Same with the Challenger.

Not only does real gas provide better mileage, the evaporative emissions systems in our older vehicles are not up to the task of dealing with blended fuels in the summer. Take a mid 1990s Cruiser from 5,000 to 7,500 feet on a hot summer day and open the gas cap.
