Hello everyone,

I'm coming off owning a 100 series that I loved.

I have a 62 that is my build out and project vehicle. It's very close to being fully completed, maybe another 3-4 years timeframe and it's done (inside, outside, and underneath).

I'm contemplating either finding a nice low mileage 2013-2015 or possibly jump to a 2016.

I was curious about opinions between these and just your general thoughts about them as daily drivers and with taking the kids on the occasional outdoors trip.

What are the main differences between these years? I will continue my search of threads but thought I'd post up.

Thanks!

I'm in a similar situation. I have a mildly built 100 and I'm looking for a low-mile 200. The FAQ threads don't include the 2016, so I've just parsed through Edmunds. They seem pretty much equivalent. It seems like they aren't moving off the market very fast - there are a lot of 2016's that look really nice that are just sitting - do you get that impression in your search?

2016+ updated interior features, new interior colors, hood buldge, 8 speed auto. Those are the first things that come to my mind, anyone else feel free to chime in and/or correct me if I am wrong.

re: how fast these things are going may depend on location, there was a 16' on a local lot our here in CA, it sat for less than a week (if I recall it was listed at $60k). Do you like the "look" of the 16' or the 13' to 15's? The 16+ are really growing on me, especially with a nice front bumper on there.

2016+ got exterior facelift (grill, hood, etc), 8-speed tranny, different wheels, updated interior - leather color mentioned above, updated NAV system, buttons/controls relocated to console from dash (this was a big "+" in my opinion), rear entertainment monitors on the seats (this was a big "-" in my opinion), TPMS sensors that update to follow your tire location, and some extra safety features... but i can't recall the details on that.

hope that helps

What I haven't seen mentioned already:

2016 replaced brakes with bigger Tundra brakes

New LED lights front/rear

Yes I get this impression for sure. There’s a local dealer with a new one that’s just sitting. So they seem like a year model that’s to be had for a deal if you find the right dealer that doesn’t want it sitting in their inventory anymore...

I really like the look of the 16 now : )

A little iffy about the 8 speed switch... and also I believe they have KDSS...not sure if that matters if it’s a DD and kid/weekend hauler.

Do you think this simple logic out ways any other pros/cons?

i thought the '16+ models were purdy... that helped my decision. the other features - like the button relocation were bonuses. aside from the rear seat entertainment, i like everything about the '16+ models... and frankly, my kids love the monitors, so they're an annoyance i'll live with for the foreseeable future, even if there was a removal solution available today.

I was trying to decide between the same, and it came down to a few factors. There were some early issues with the new 8 speed transmission that sounded like a hassle, and reliability is my top concern so that concerned me a bit. They appear to either have been fixed or remedied because I haven't seen any new threads about it in a while. The other driving factor was that I could either buy a 16+ and would have to keep it stock or close to stock, or I could buy a 13-15 and build it up exactly how I wanted for about the same amount of money. Because nothing appreciably changed other than cosmetics and the transmission, I went with the 13-15. I thought long and hard about an 08-11, but I wanted the updated electronics and other gadgets in the 13-15. I found my 14 that was already partially built, still under factory warranty, and was clean and local, so that sealed the deal for me.

See that’s exactly where I’ve been led. The 8-speed started a chain reaction to thinking about what’s really different.

The longevity and build potential of the 13-15 definitely intrigues me as it’s price point is more appealing, but the 16+ is very good looking but has the 8-speed.

Thanks everyone for chiming in : )

Yeah forgot about the 8spd tranny, I'm sure it's fine but hasn't been tested to the extend the 6spd has.

A 13 through 15 may be a slightly better value too from a depreciation perspective.

And I haven't added the parts yet but technically you could put a 16' front end (hood, lights, grill, (I don't think you need to replace the front fenders but it's been a while since I looked - there was a vid from Middle East where a shop swapped both front and rear ends with the 16+ equipment)).

Good luck, may also come down to what you can find, how particular you are about one owner and wheeler the truck has lived, the deal itself, color, etc...? Sometimes beggars can't be choosers in the search for a 200.

Those rear seat TV screens are a real downer. I think someone is working on a delete plate.

The 8 speed tranny would concern me. It seems like 8 gears is a bit excessive, and adds complexity.

I'm not representing my opinions as being those of an expert, so take it for what its worth.

I do agree that the '16's and '17's look nice.

There are no cons to the 2016+, I have a 2013 and it feels dated but its what I could afford. I actually kind of wish I had bought the LX570. If you have the money 2016+ is your best bet.

Pretty much just looking for the right rig under $60k with less than 30k.

It appears to me that 2013-2015 LX’s are in abundance, and then Toyota versions are a little more scare.

2016’s seems to sit...even some knew.

As far as color, not too thrilled with Burgundy, so that’d be the only no unless the price was just AMAZING.

I would choose MY2013-2015. The 6 speed transmission is tried and true, and ultra reliable. 8 speed is still too new for my comfort.

A friend of mine has a 2017 LX and his wife's biggest complaint is that the mounted rear DVD system make the headrests excessively big. She actually prefers my 09's rear DVD drop down. YMMV.

I've done a lot of reading about the '16 transmission mainly because I have one and want to stay on top of any issues. I literally have seen *one* actual issue/problem that was taken to the dealer and I believe Toyota offered to buy their vehicle so they could use it for research. I haven't seen any others. I've seen people say it's not like the old transmission and I will tell you it gear hunts in a very specific situation and there's even a workaround for that*, but aside from that it's been fine. Long term, well it's new so who can say, but judging from Toyota's reaction to the one problem I've seen I don't expect them to let any owners go unhappy. I wanted to throw this in because I've seen one problem go from "a guy had a problem" to "I heard it has issues" as if there have actually been widespread problems with it. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's like the telephone game and getting blown out of proportion.

My only complaint about the transmission is the lurch going from 1st to 2nd gear, but that's been in the LC since at least '08, according to these forums.

*Gear hunting after the TSB is limited to cruise control, decreasing the set speed from 3-5 mph. Anything outside of that, mine doesn't gear hunt any longer.
