Thought you guys might enjoy these pictures. This fiasco was the day before the Paliza run. Anyone wanna guess what happened?

Well the pictures make the guess really easy. That rock scar on the front bumper probably was related. Then the rock took out the bolt/nut on the end of the relay rod (or is it the tie rod, or drag link, ah who cares) Can we blame it on the fact that it's a Heep or would that be a stretch? Those probably aren't the original Heep parts anyway. Maybe he just didn't put the cotter pin back in the nut the last time he played with it.

I suppose that's a good lesson on why you should always put the cotter pins back in. Let someone else learn the hard way and take notes.

I'm amazed that anyone would need this lesson.

BTW--I'm amazed at how many improperly secured cotter pins there are out there. I swear, one day I'll give a seminar on the TWO correct ways to put in a cotter pin.

My TR ends have some crazy diaper pins in them, would you like to install some real cotter pins in it? Ill wait til then if you wish...

Pictures? It's not so much the strength of the cotter pin that's important (I've certainly removed a few by just spinning the nut hard enough to cut them clean off), it's that they cannot fall or rattle out that's important. You shouldn't be able to cut them off without an impact wrench or a 3 foot breaker (read: if a rock cuts them, then you've got other crap to worry about).

There are some pin types that I would certainly use in lieu of a cotter pin (look at tractor hardware, like for a 3-point hitch, etc...).

What a maroon. Why would anyone omit a cotter pin? You can't get any true torque value since there's a taper to the TRE.
