Hey,

we have had the PTO installed on my wifes DD which was our work horse too...
for working it´s perfekt, doesn´t get hot, doesn´t drain the battery...

and it is defenetly a nice piece of technik to look at...;)

you can only beat that when you have to save weight and need a quick recovery winch.
For that reason we use an electic winch with Dynema cable on our "Travelling Cruiser"....

Soenke,
That winch looks great. What company made that winch and what is the model number? Is that one of the ATS custom winches or is it a Toyota PTO?
Thanks,
John

That is a Toyota OEM PTO mounted on a 70 series...

I thought as much but the fact that it looked so new was what was throwing me.

John, it looked different when we got it. It had been working on a HZJ 70 in the malaysian forest before...

for getting it in the HZJ71 the radiator has to be lifted a little.

The winch is the same in 40, 60 and 70 just the bumper holder differs and the PTO depending on the gearbox (4 or 5 speed) and the driveshaft of course

to late... @ Poser, that is a beauty ...

Matt.....You are the man.

That is just a thing of beauty, jeez the amount of work that went into getting it to look like that...

Soenke,
Thanks for answering an unasked question regarding the winch. I'm hoping that I can find a rusted one in either a junk yard or on someones old rusted out farm truck in a field around here in Central America I was beginning to wonder if there were differences in the winches that came on different series cruisers. There aren't. The winch is the same. What differed is the mounting hardware, drive shaft and front or rear output. Those bits are all doable either off the same truck or scrounged up from Curt or Mud classified, etc. Thanks,
John

I think I'm going to go with the PTO mainly because I got a line on a complete setup for a decent price and I have a diesel. Only thing I need to find out is how hard it will be to fab up to make the bolt pattern of the 76FJ40 that it is coming off of fit that of my 81 BJ42. Good to know that I will have to upgrade the shear pin as well.

I've been in a situation where two electric winches would not recover a rolled vehicle, and a PTO winch snatched the vehicle easily. On the other hand, the two times I needed a winch to recover my own vehicle, my engine was not running (not able to run) and my electric pulled me out when a PTO would have been useless without engine power!!!

My recommendation is to get the correct PTO takeoff for the split transfer case which is likely what you have.

Check with G&S Cruiserparts or Crushers.

Were the Electrics underpowered?

I have an electric and it has never failed me...and its overpowered and slow :) like a cruiser LOL ....but with that said....I would go with a PTO...they are nice, oem and cool as well as perform very well in all situations....other than if you have a stalled vehicle.

Got any more info on this? Pics of the setup?

X2 In my never ending quest to find something that won't leave me crying as I watch most of my pay stub drift away before I can actually use the money for food:grinpimp: I was trolling around the winching forums and found this recommended by a fellow mudder:

Winches - Greg Smith Equipment Sales, Inc

The 10k version was recommended over the 13k based on it's gearing. Thereafter ensued two debates, the first was similar to the pto v. electric debate, i.e. if the rig isn't running then neither will the hydraulic winch. On this one I figure if you have decided pto v. electric the same logic will apply to hydraulic v. electric.

The second debate was over running hydraulic off of the toyota ps pump. Those who have tried claim that the Toyota ps pump is too weak to run the hydraulic winch or it will run it but leave the winch running slow or underpowered. I have the 60 series ps setup in the mail should arrive any day so this concerns me. The solution was running the hydraulic pump off of the pto. It is said that there are folks here who have done it. Does anyone have a picture of a hydraulic pump running off of a pto? I have not given up on the pto idea but that is alot of pull for a decent price if you can work out the pump/pto issue. Thoughts?
John

EDIT:
Are we talking something like this. If so the pump costs as much as the winch:

Is Lowenbrau around searches on here keep popping up his build thread:
