Hi there,

I know somewhere a Landcruiser PTO for sale. I try to find out on what kind of cruiser it was mounted, but at the moment I still don't know.
My HZJ79 is built in 2002, are all the PTO's the same or are there different types of gears etc? On the internet and on this forum I see every time the same mounting plate with 6 holes, so at least the all look the same.
What is the max speed and the max output power of the PTO? Is it possible to use all 5 gears? And is it possible to use the PTO while driving?
And the output shaft also reverse when you put the transmission in reverse? I want to mount a hydraulic pump on it for a salt spreader/sweeper/crane or something else. Has anyone experience with a hydraulic pump on the PTO? Will there be some problems when you reverse? I don't think that the hydraulic pump likes it a lot...
And does someone have pictures of the control lever inside the cabin?

Thanks in advance, and greetz from Holland

I'm not sure about all those questions, but I'll do the best I can. The reverse works letting out cable. In theory you can use all 5 speeds but I wouldn't recommend it. I've read 3rd gear is about at fast as you want to go and that should be really only used for re-winding the cable. Just because of the age of mine and the maintenance I haven't gone past 3rd gear and try to keep it in 1st if pulling. 3rd gear gets a bit noisy.

I've read that you can have your tires spinning while you pull, but don't quote me on that. When you say driving do you mean cruising down the road? I'm pretty sure that is not recommended at all.

He's talking about using the PTO to run a hydraulic pump, not the factory winch.

That being said, I have no idea the answer to any of his questions. I have wondered myself. I found a company that installs hydraulic equipment on 70 series that appears to be using a PTO hydraulic system. Maybe you can talk to them?

It looks like you'd have to get a crankshaft driven PTO to be able to drive and operate the PTO at the same time. Typically you would engage the PTO drive and that disengages the drive to the axles.

the HZJ 79 may mount a bj or an hdj mechanical winch , with some modification on the front part of the frame .
however it can mount ONLY the bj PTO , made for the 5 speed gear box.
all other are NOT adeguate as they are , or must be heavy modified.
pls note there are 3 bj PTO versions.
the 5 speed has only 1 gear faceing the window-
the toyota 80 PTO is definitive NOT suitable , because it has a 10 bolt window , against a 6 bolt widow of a HZJ transfer case.

hope this will help.

He doesn't want a winch. He wants to run a hydraulic system using the gear from the PTO drive.

Like that...

Buy the mating gasket for the unit that fits your truck and compare it to the unit that is for sale. That will get you started.

It is possible to use all 5 gears but I don't know if they have a recommended maximum rpm on the PTO. I think you would have to disengage the PTO while you are reversing.
Another way of powering an attachment is an electrically powered hydraulic pump. Its what most operators use now to power small cranes and pumps on landcruisers.
In Australia ,they use a lot of Landcruiser utes for lawn mowing ,spraying weed killer and other things like you want to do and that's what they use. The fire brigade also use electrically powered hydraulics.
The PTO has been deleted from the V8 models I believe because of this.
You can mount the unit anywhere and the end price is probably cheaper than what the PTO set up will be.

This pic look like its in 84-90 model

Thanks for the replies! I prefer a mechanical/hydraulic system rather than an electrical system. I found on the power-trax site that it's possible to have a 30 kW output, with 12V that wouldn't be possible... And one of the things I may want to mount in the future is an centrifugal pump for water or an hydraulic driven generator. They need quite some hydraulic power, and my truck will not be driving while pumping etc.

Maybe it's possible to make an electric/magnetic clutch that will shift when reversing to avoid damage to the pump.
I hope it will fit my cruiser! Price is quite okay for European market...
The owner told me it is from a 75 or 78 cruiser, which was built in 2000. And i think 75's are built till 2000, and 78's from 2000? Do you think it will fit my cruiser? I now asked or the car had spring leafs or spiral springs (is that proper english??) , I thought this is the biggest difference between 75's and 78's

If you know the year and model number for the truck use an online parts number source to check the part numbers for the Pto units.
