Somebody offered to trade me a set of 35" MTRs I have for a 94 FJ80 chassis. The chassis lacks a front axle, steering box and rear 3rd member. However I am really considering the trade. I got a very clean 88 FJ62 sitting here along with my v8 powered 84 FJ60.

Which means....I am really interested in this build, moreso then normal!

Body mounts are mocked up using all factory Toyota mounts with the exception of the rearmost one. Not sure about the large one under my feet yet. Looks like some serious gusseting will have to happen. Will do the final welds and gusseting tomorrow. Been working on the fuel tank situation and after many ideas on mounting, I think I have settled for a rear belly pan style mount where the stock 62 tank will sit in a form fitting pan that bolts to the 80 series frame with only the sump part of the tank hanging down out of the pan. The sump will be forward towards the rear axle and even in the most crazy situations, I dont think there will be any clearance issues. It will not hang down below the frame anyway. If this works out with the pan idea, I may make several pans to mount 62 tanks under 80 series trucks as aux tanks. Much cheaper than OEM 80 series sub tanks and readily available still keeping it Toyota. I should have some pics soon of the tank assembly.

I was working on the tranny support as the tranny/tcase was not position rearward enough to use the stock holes in the crossmember and started to extend the top with plate and box it in, but while rummaging around Christos shop, look what I found....A prototype skid plate/crossmember for an 80 :) I went out the back door with it and it is a perfect fit, even splitting the area of the frame that was spliced so this should add even more strength to that area. A few new transmission mount holes and away we go. It will go back on the mill first to make a few modifications to suit this setup, but for the most part, its done.

Gary, it looks like you have the body on the frame... What have you done to allow the 62's cargo area to drop between the 80's rear frame rails? In an earlier pic it looked like there was interference there, maybe it was home already...

Any trans/TCase interference?

The rear inner fender wells were cut and re-welded to allow the body to drop down over the 80 frame. From the side view the only far part of the frame visible is the last 5", which I may cut off and tuck up so its not visible. The transmission and tcase fit as well as the 62 stuff did because its moved forward 1.75" allowing the extra clearance. The engine has been lowered 1" and pushed back 4" giving about 10" between the pulleys and radiator. The conversion is not really difficult, but then again not as easy as I originally thought. I will have many hours in it just trying to make it look right.
 
HEY WAIT!!! He was saving that skid plate for me!!! Man! I need a skid plate like that. To bad he did not go into production with them.
