Well it's been a long time since i've updated this thread, but i've been burning the candle on both ends and down the middle too with other things.
Quick update, looks like i'll be able to get in the shop today. . .
I went down the path of making 90 degree bell cranks for the rears to keep the shocks from coming up thru the floor. went so far as making the bells, made frame attachments, got the DOM for the links QA1 rod ends. etc. was ready to hard weld it all in then . . . Got an email back from Fox that i sent months ago, and resent the week before: the 2.5 Airshox MUST be run as vertically as possible.
Soooo. . . Scrapped all the bell crank stuff, said good bye to 2 weeks of hard fab work and punched holes in the tub. The good part is that they'll only need to be 6" into the tub, and some 3" dia . tail light rubber surrounds will seal the gap. Unlike those of you in the southern states, we get a lot of rain, and I for one don't like getting the wet stripe up my back when driving the highway.
currently, i've made a front halo (not depicted in these photos) and arranged the mounting points through the tub. Cage will be tied in to the frame through the body, and also through the firewall to the front shock hoops, and finally triangulated through to the engine mounts and front link mounts. All this is designed to limit frame stresses, as mine appears to be wearing a little worse that i had hoped.
The interior cage is intended to work with both hard and soft tops so it's been bent around that. TO further complete the bastardization, i'm putting in a Heep sound bar over the front seats.
These photos show a bit how the front tube fenders look before being skinned.
