The double tranny thing is difficult unless the second tranny is a non-synchronized unit, as the synchros on these trannies are not stout enough to slow the weight of another tranny mainshaft in front of it.

No, I've never heard of that one. Got details? Right now i'm researching dual T cases or dual trannies. . . Can't seem to find any dual H 42s out there. THe Toybox is far too spendie for my budget.

two thoughts for you:
an nv4500 will add the length/gearing you want.
or... in the gm/chevy 1.5-2.5 ton trucks (3100-4600) the sm420 was bolted to a spicer rangebox or secondary trans that had 1 or two over or under drive gears. might be hard to find but this has the same output as the sm420 and bolts right to the back of it.
cool build-up! carl

looks like you are working hard being light in the engine compartment, why not go light in the gearbox section aswell ,a nv4500 must be heavier than the eng you got, why not got automatic and save some weight

A bit of a change of plans now.

I've decided to go with a Mini-truck tranny and t case using a Marlin adaptor to continue to run my cruiser T case (Doubler). That would provide a 153:1 ratio and dual cases. . .

It would also provide me the added length from the shifter to the engine bay.

-This would acomplish a few things: my nice virtually new HADL shafts would not have to be modified,

- proven toyota tranny

- dual cases

- 6.5" additional length over stock with the extra case.

- smaller clutch and flywheel diameter to better adapt to the Audi engine.

For those that have or have driven the Audi's I'm sure that you'll understand the low end that those motors can put out. I was originally looking for a 2.7 BT but a twin turbo motor on the trail might not be that useful.

I'll pick up the tranny on the weekend, and add the marlin adaptor next week!

Yeh progress!

Have finally got around to getting the tranny and tcase from a mini. Tcase looks good inside, but the 2wd / 4wd shift fork broke during roll pin removal. Not a big deal as the that fork gets de-comissioned anyhow, but it's still a bit of a pain. Marlin dual adapter is on the way now, and a test fit of the tranny indicates that it will push the motor about 8" in front of the firewall. Room good!

Pulled of the bell housing, it is close to a bolt up to the Audi motor. Should require a simple plate to get it up to the mini tranny. I'm looking at the possibility of using the Audi manual transmission flywheel, and adapting the mini flywheel and pressure plate for maximum compatibility.

Also got the wiring sorted out off the harness. Most if the original harness is intact and can be mated up to the original positions of the connectors.

When I wanted my 40 "outside the square" I made it 98" wheelbase, and fitted a 400hp and 660ft lb [@ the wheels] 454 mounted 3" further back than standard for balance, with 75 series power steering and 4 wheel disc brakes, and 60 series springs.

Those audi bits have just f%$@#d up a good 40 :flipoff2:

to each their own i guess.

Some competition rock buggies use Subaru, Ecotech, even Toyota Matrix engines.

Why not go with a race bred / proven motor when my interest is obviously not to smoke my tires up every rock face that i encounter?

Trust me, my Cruiser can do fine with out Wet Coast terrain as it was, now it gets better!

(and yes, i know the fog lite covers are gay. . .)

More power 2 ya. Thinking out side of the box is good.

I think it's rad.

that looks like it's a G52 tranny - if so, it's only going to last to the end of the driveway before you blow the thing up. Even if it's a W56, you're only good for about 180lb/ft of torque w/o risking blowing it up.

For a mini truck tranny behind a v8, you'll need a R150 or 151 (which would be the ultimate)...

Cool build!

Well, i guess i'm somewhat luckier. It's a G54 actually. oh well, the tranny was $150 CAD so i can afford a few of them if i need to.
Thanks for the kudos, i need all the support i can get!

Not familiar w/ the G54... What engine did it sit behind? The G52 was behind 84-88+ 22r's, w56 behind the 22re's with some w58's found in a few 2nd gen 4Runners w/ 22re's. The 150 was behind the 3.0 and 3.4 V6 and the 151 behind the 22rte. If you can get your hands on one of the latter two, you'll be set. Otherwise, good luck!

I like it, I have always wanted to put a BMW s54 motor out of a M3 in my Taco, 333hp and 333 lb/ft would do me just fine. I think having an SMG tranny would be pretty sick too, with yota dual t-cases of course.

So i did some searching: Couldn't find an exact torque maximum for the G 52 / 54 but i DID find adapter plates to put V8s in front of them.

But all for not, i've found a V6 tranny that i'll use. ^@#^$(** now i need to get ANOTHER adapter plate ( V6 - 4 Cyl T case - LC t case)

sheesh

so seriously.

anyone need:

-4 speed LC tranny
-2 - 4 cyl mini trannies
-1 V6 T case?

You'll be much happier w/ the R150.

Buy the adapter from inchworm. I've run two marlin adapters, and I *think* Jim's adapter has a better seal at the splines to help thwart the issue of tranny fluid flowing into the tcases.... but not flowing back. Bad juju. I know Marlin's can be fixed w/ some good sealant, but Jim's may have the issue resolved from the factory.

progress

Slow as i expected, but i didn't expect to be held up by an unnamed adapter plate manufacturer that takes 3 weeks to actually acknowlege the order that was placed, before considering delivering it. . .

Anyways, the wackyness of this project continues.

adapting a:

Audi V6
to
Toyota 151F
to
Toyota Top shift 4cyl tcase
to
Toyota H42 Transfercase
to
BJ 62 driveline
to
BJ / FJ 60 axles.

Sounds like fun huh? with all this installed, i guestimate that the driveline will push the motor 10 inches forward, keep the 4 shifers in a reasonable location, and allow me to continue running my current driveshafts.

More CAD work to go today.

Hey just wondering if you ever drive that thing down the highway. If so how does it do?

As in Have i ever driven it with the 4 link setup? yes, i drove it last year to and from the trails, wheeled the hell out of it, and drove home.

My Marling stuff just arrived yesterday (and some parts were mis-shipped :frown::frown:) so i'll start my 4 stick setup once i get the right stuff in.

Progress:

i took apart the V6 tranny this weekend: all looks good. Once the right stuff arrives, then i'll put together the driveline.

THey also sent me a 10 degree clocking plate, so i guess, it get some more clearance whether i like it or not.

Re-located one of my air-shock perches lower down to lose some lift. i figure i took about 3 inches out of the front. Problem was that i had only 5" of up stroke set on the shock, and then 13" of down stroke! now it should be more balanced, with a slightly more reasonable looking stance.

Old pic. I've re-located the shock bracket in the lower control arm bracket and boxed and gusseted up the whole works.

IMG_5254.jpg

an example of how the front sat too high:

and when it unloads, there's lots of down stroke.

with decent up-stroke (rear stuffed to the max, front almost there)

dude thats AWESOME FLEX, i wish mine did that!
