Problem in A442F transmission

Miguel was recommending me the Rodney´s Extreme transmission, but I was explaining that the cost involved in such an operation is too high for me to pay now and also in relation to the vehicle´s value (although used vehicles here are WAY higher in comparison to 1º world countries, proportionally to the brand new vehicle).

Miguel, please tell me the price of the tranny from its origin (without shipping costs and import taxes).

I understand your point of view but, unfortunately, I can´t afford such an expense now :(

How much does a vehicle like this cost in Spain and in the USA? Here its around U$S20.000.

Hello Miguel .. Corralito are big words ... you really thougt .. and that the reason why you suppose that anybody are selling nothing ? thought again car related or all stuff .. ?

hijack over ..

A Toyota dealer in Paraguay offered us the part at a good price so we bought it. It´ll take like 30 days to arrive from Japan, but at least they are taking the lead in the repair.

I will tell you how this goes on.

Solenoid Change Out or Clean

If your symptoms are that the transmission will not go into overdrive (OD).... then I had a similar issue on another FZJ80 I helped to fix. I changed out the solenoids in the pan and still nothing changed. It ended up being the OD sprag which wasn't allowing OD to engage. Cheap part around $125.... but labor was around $650 to R/R and install the new part from a local shop. I got out for relatively cheap overall.

Easy to change the solenoiid on the A442 .. ? easy access .. job . ?
Hey guys, I am interested in this information. I have an HDJ81 with the A442 Tranny. I have been having problems with the O/D Light flashing, a few weeks ago the tranny would still shift into O/D; however, in the last 4-5 days I have decreased my speed to 80-90K and have had the O/D off during this time to help with gas mileage. I just made a road trip (700KM) from the Lake to Calgary with average mountain speeds at 80 - 90KM/H; however, on the open bald prairie highway I tried to engage O/D and make up some time and have not been able to get her to shift into O/D.
Thoughts??:bang:

Is it possible to swap the A442F for an A343F ? .. I wonder if they are bolt up replaceable ? ..

1995-1997 From Slee ..
  • Automatic transmission changes to the A343F. Some 95’s were produced with the A442F. The transmission type is printed on the label on the driver door.

It appears that the A343F & A442F are bolt up replaceable .. Don't think the bolt patterns would change .. Mounting points are the bigger question ..

Bolt up, yes. The engine-transmission control interface will not sync up. If you had a hydraulic A442, and wanted to get an A343 you could possibly buy a compushift controller and be good to go.

The A442F uses a separate transmission controller that interfaces with the ECM. The A343F models have the transmission controller built into the engine ECM. I recall threads in the past asking the same question with no solutions other than to add an aftermarket controller at of cost of $1000 making it impractical from a cost standpoint. It would also required different length driveshafts as I recall adding more costs.

Phil,

So which Transmission was most sought after and what was the reasons for that choice .. I have read that both have weak points and strong points .. The A343F tranny has 3rd / 4th gear issues which can be mitigated by a 3rd / 4th gear locker .. Cruiser Brothers offers a superior torque converter and a fantastic valve body kits which improve energy transfer and efficiency .. I've had many Toyota's and all of their automatics really don't handle higher engine output very well .. The slop in my Tundra pickup tranny is proof of this .. I recently rented a GMC pickup which gave me 18 miles per gallon highway .. I had my Tundra services in Tucson AZ and they asked if I was staying in AZ .. I said yes .. They re-flashed my ECU and I went from 13.1 mpg to 15.5 mpg .. Screw Commiefornia and their emission baloney ! .. The GMC tranny shifting was tight and maximized near perfect engine Rpm Shifting with no jumpiness even with such tight shifting .. I would guess with a few transmission upgrades (already spoke to cruiser brothers) that I could also easily get 18 mpg and decrease the wear on my tranny in the tundra .. I asked what kind of increase I could get with an A343 and they said that it would be close to 20% with the Lockup for 3rd / 4th gears, very high performance torque converter and the valve body .. They also said that with these changes I could expect a 20%-30% reduction in transmission fluid heat depending upon driving conditions .. I asked what would be the turbo pressure range and they said that with those mods that the transmission would not need an cooler if I was to keep it @25 lbs or below .. If I was running higher pressures up to 35 lbs then an transmission radiator would be necessary but would still hold up running at ~375 hp .. I don't need that kind of horse power .. I think 20 - 25 lbs is good enough for me .. I suppose if I were towing my 14 ft trailer I could just adjust the waste gate down a bit to keep transmission fluid temps in line .. Don't know yet if I will put a transmission radiator on yet or not ..

After I get my Landcruiser set up well I plan to sell my Tundra 1794 Crew Cab .. Its a great truck but I expect to get far better mileage from the Landcruiser .. Turbo Diesels just sound better ..

for what?
