I filled up @ a station I've never used today. It also had a nozzle like I've never seen as well. When I started filling up, after about 15 seconds on high, it started spewing fuel out of a port on the nozzle 'cover' on the pump handle. Tried several times & if I used more than about 1/3 of a full squeeze on the pump handle it'd do this. Think it's my truck or the new style pump handle covers not really compatible w/older vehicles? I do get a lot of suction when unscrewing gas cap, for about 6-8 seconds. Thanks.

That seems strange... Do you always get venting when opening/removing the gas cap? Is your truck running hot and causing your gas to boil (just a stab at it)? I have heard of extreme venting in the summer but it seems to go away during cooler months. I was having venting issues in the summer (hot conditions) while running the air. I flushed my cooling system and it seemed to help.

Yes it always vents for 6-8 seconds after running a full tank of fuel. Not running hot @ all, always below the middle of cold & hot. Haven't ran the AC much on last fill up due to cool weather lately.

I'm gonna say it.... Don't go there again.

It sounds like your EVAP system is failing. Likely the charcoal canister if it's never been replaced. You can refill it or replace it. Use the search function for some links to cheap canisters you can use. You may want to do some sleuthing to see if any of the other valves or ports are blocked before replacing the charcoal canister.

I think you all are off, and making more of this than it is.

This has been happening to me lately - every fillup, hot or cold weather, happens after filling tank for about 1 minute. From the filler door, there are two tubes going to the tank, a big one for filling fuel and a small one to vent air.I think the issue may be (was going to search) the vent tube to the tank may be clogged, so the air displaced from the gas tank during fill up has nowhere to go but through the filler neck. I was going to try to use compressed air to clean out the vent tube.

Are you in California? Some stations switched to the new type of vapor recovery nozzles, I had the same problem at a Chevron in San Jose. I didn't even notice until the station attendant came out and started bitching. I usually now just rotate the nozzle handle to the 4-5 o'clock position and haven't had any problems.

I used CRC electronics cleaner to clean/open the valves on my truck's canister, it evaporates quickly and doesn't damage rubber components (do not use carb cleaner!!). Could compressed air (too much pressure) pop something loose?? IDK.

Update:

This was bugging me this morning, when I spilled probably at least a pint of gas while filling up, so I took it to task today.

I removed the filler neck cover under the fuel hatch - removing the 4 big screws and undoing the release latch nut to do so. With the cover removed, you can see to the right of the filler neck the smaller (about 1/2" OD" metal vent tube. I felt inside the filler to find the hole - it is angled back down the filler neck, a bad angle to blow into.

Using some 1/4" vacuum hose taped to a wire hanger and bent backward, I was able to fish the hose through the filler opening (holding the flap open with a scribe) and back up into the vent tube opening. This was a chore and took about 10 minutes to successfully get it seated in the vent tube. Then I blew 90 lbs of compressed air through the vacuum hose into the vent tube. I could hear the air rushing down into the tank and gurgling in the tank, so if it was clogged before it is not now. I'll report back after my next fillup to see if this was the issue. If this does not cure it, I'll pull the cover at the tank (under the second row seats) and blow out the line from there.

Flank, I see your from Dallas. This was in south Arlington @ the Walmart @ Little Rd. It's a completely different nozzle cover(looks to be a new 'recovery' type nozzle). It's odd it happened to both of us & we live only 30 miles apart!!! I actually live down in Waxahachie but was traveling thru Arlington. I think it's a nozzle issue & not a truck issue. Please update this when you fill up your tank again.

I will update. The reason I don't think it is a nozzle is because I've used the same gas station since it opened early in the spring, and my problem only started about 2 months ago or so. The nozzles I've been using don't completely seal up the filler, there are two 1/8" or so holes for venting.

For filling, air not able to escape is an obstruction, if the air can't escape, the gas can't get in as fast. Again, I think I have a handle on it but will report back soon.

Gas was spewing out of the 1/8" vent holes on the right side of the handle. Is it a Murphy fuel station? After researching more it appears it's a problem w/the nozzles. If you turn the nozzle, or hold the boot back, air can be vented efficiently & it doesn't cause fuel spillage. Maybe your pumps upgraded to a stronger/faster pump, or changed to a winter fuel, & that's why your just now seeing a difference. I'm going to fill up a couple times thru this next week(doing some traveling) & I'll post back. Thanks.

Isn't this the classic "clogged charcoal canister?"

There are a lot of threads on this. The FSM gives steps to test and try to clean it....which normally doesn't work.

The oem replacement is too expensive, many are using a GM canister or disconnecting all together.

**Update** I've used 3 other pumps to fill up with and none have done the spewing thing so I'm chalking it up to the funky nozzle head/jacket that was on the one pump. If it changed I'll post back up!

Any updates? I just experienced this issue last week.

I would say there nothing wrong with your truck's evap system.

The new EPA mandated fume recovering nozzles are CRAPOLA! They are not made to work with older cars that have a deeply recessed filler neck with integral vent.

Costco has them here and they seal so well the vent line that comes up the filler neck from the tank cannot vent so the tank pressurizes as you fill it and CLICK the pump shuts off! I have to hold the nozzle and it is a serious pain since only about 1/8 of an inch of the nozzle is below the filler neck.

Gone are the days of filling the car and cleaning the windshield.

I think I forgot to come back to these threads when I witnessed my cruiser take fuel without flipping the handle or trickling it in. No condom on the nozzle, smooth fill up for the thirsty gal.

So if you can get your rig to a station with the old school nozzles, you'll be good. Otherwise pull back the accordion shaped nozzle cover before inserting into the filler and make sure you hold that cover back the whole time.
